I had only had a handful of cold sores in my adult life until recently. I've had 3 now in the past 2-3 months. I put abreva and carmex on them as soon as I feel them coming, but I'm just getting annoyed! They aren't fun. They usually end up splitting my lip, so it takes longer to heal. Why am I getting them more now. I've only been sick once and that's this one I'm getting tonight. The other ones I wasnt even sick. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

I get them as well and I know like another mom said that STRESS does cause cold sores as well as dry/chafted lips. I used Lysing in ointment and pill form which helps a lot. Carmex doesn't help it at all.
I hope this helps.

I began to have more and more cold sores, more and more often, more and more painful after I turned 30.
After many exams with doctor and dentist and a stupid bet with my husband, we discovered I had developed an allergy to chocolate! It will be 10 years at Christmas that I haven't had cold sores or chocolate.
It seems that other allergies can do the same (according to my doctor and dentist: coffee, tea, cheese, some nuts.
It can also be an herpes.

Cold sores are caused by a herpes virus (not that kind of herpes, a different kind!) that lives in your body and sun, stress or wind can bring it on. Ask your doctor for a prescription for Valtrex. Take it at the first tingle you feel. Also, as you've had so many lately ask your doctor if you should be on suppression therapy (a lower dose Valtrex) for a month or two to get it to settle down. It will work.

Cold sores are herpes type 1. So if you keep getting cold sores that much i would def. talk to my doctor about getting a prescription for valtrex. Also which you may know do not have any kind of oral sex when having a cold sore which could spread to herpes type 2. So def. give your doctor a call and let them know that these keep recurring.

Often times, stress and illness will bring these on. I get these as well (although they are more infrequent as of late). When I feel them coming on (my lips get kind of painful and itchy), I immediately take a Vitamin packet. I use Emergen-C. It is just vitamins in powder form that you mix in water. I use this because vitamins (in the pill form) make me feel nauseous.

But, sometimes, I notice that when I get my vitamins on board, my body fights the virus off a little sooner. Whatever you do, don't pick at your sores. They need to dry out as well. I would keep on doing what it is you're doing, but also add a little boost of vitamins as well. You may see a reduction in how long they last.

I second the Valtrex, when I feel one coming on I IMMEDIATELY call my doctor and get a prescription, the sooner you take it the better. I usually try and keep at least one pill in my purse or at home so that if one comes on I have one to take while I wait for the dr to call me back :)

Just like Julie said there are a lot of different reasons, mine are usually caused by stress and wind (dry lips). It is a real pain, I know!

Please go to the doctor and be check for the herpes virus which can cause cold sores on lips and if it does come back positive their is viral medicine you can take to prevent outbreaks. By the way their are different types of the herpes virus and one causes cold sores and another one causes genital herpes.
