Toning Tummy but Not Trying to Lose Weight

I've worked very hard to re-gain the weight that my DD sucked out of my while breastfeeding. Problem is... all of the weight has gone straight to my tummy. I am not looking to lose ANY weight, but I want to tone my legs and especially my tummy. Any suggestions?

What can I do next?

In my experience, the only way to lose the belly is to lose that weight. Because ANY extra weight you have on your body: Is on your belly. And no matter how toned your tummy muscles are under there, they're still going to be under that blubber (my blubber comes and goes now as I gain and lose those few pounds). You have to tone everything and lose all the weight. The belly goes last. If you're already as slim as you want to be except for belly, then you don't have far to go! Just get to work toning those legs, and it will help burn off the belly.

Pilates reformer will tone your core area best! Find a local pilates studio or check w/local gym. The gym I belong too offer reformer classes so I would start looking around.

Ditto what Amy said. As for specifically targeting your core, pilates is excellent. Anything that involves doing "plank" moves will be good, and pilates is wonderful. I would suggest that if you want to try pilates, that you take a class in the beginning, as it is difficult to tell if you are doing the moves accurately on your own in the beginning. It is really helpful to have someone watch you and tell you where you need to correct, as the moves are small, but it is crucial to the workout that you get them right.

General cardio exercise will help your overall fitness level. To not lose weight, just track how much you eat vs how much you expend by exercising. I use an app called my fitness pal to do this, but they also have a website- both are free :)
For toning- crunches, plank, squats, and lunges can all be done without equipment. Anything that is a core body strengthening exercise will help tone your tummy. Easy equipment to use to increase the difficulty are bands and hand weights. You will probably want to do most of the floor exercises either on the carpet or on a yoga mat (check Ross or Marshall's for inexpensive equipment).

For legs:
-lunges (don't extend your knee past toes of the foot on ground in front of you)
-lean back against a wall, feet firmly planted in front of you & slide down
the wall until you look like you are sitting on a chair. hold for a count of
15 to start, then 30 etc.

For tummy:
crunches
planks
if you belong to a gym, hanging abdominal machine

Weight training - particularly kettle bells- will tone and stengthen your core and ab region like nothing else! Presses will suck it in and sculpt it. Make sure if you're soing kettle bells you find a RKC certified trainer. Don't get or do the infomercial ones or some class at a gym whose instructor decides it's the flavor of the month. You could seriously hurt your back if not properly taught how to use them, but they rock!

Callanetics. Super boring, sorry to say, but even more effective than it is boring. Really. Very fast results. It is just slow deep muscle toning in a relaxed atmosphere. Your library probably has the video and book- it was a hit in the 80's.

Ab-slide. I am not sure if you can still buy them in regular retail stores but I have seen them at Goodwill. You kneel on the floor and roll it out in front of you, streching your body out then back, you can also go to the left and right to tone obliques. It works but my caution is the instructions say to only use 3 minutes the first time***if your tummy muscles are really out of shape only use a minute the first couple of times**** or you may not be able to breath.
Quick leg toner --Suzanne Sommers Thigh Master. They are available on her website and yes they work!!!

The cool thing is both peices of equipment take up very little space and they work.

(thigh master can also be used to tone arms, shoulders, back ect)
