I just read an article about laser treatment for toenail fungus. Has anyone had this done with success? Did your insurance cover it? How much did it cost?

Thanks!

So What Happened?

Thank you for your advice: I hadn't heard of using Vick's before, but when I tried the Tea Tree Oil, it literally burned my feet! Don't know if it was an allergic reaction or what, but my big toe blistered around the nail, and the other toes all turned red. You can see why I might hesitate with that one. I guess I'll call a podiatrist and/or the insurnace co. about the laser. According to the article I read, It's effective 80% or more of the time (maybe 88%?), and it beats taking a potentially harmful drug... so we will see. For now, I'll just stick to nail polish in flip-flop weather! Ha

Dear M.,
I have never heard of laser treatment for toenail fungus, but I do know that tea tree oil can be effective. First, I would try Vick's vapo rub and sleeping in cotton socks. Use a brush on your toenails when you wash them and make sure they are really dry, even using the blow dryer if necessary to make sure. Then apply the Vick's. I heard about this from my mom and I know it's worked. Give it a try.

I've never had laser treatment. Have you tried rubbing Tea Tree oil on your nails twice a day? In addition drink Gota Kola tea, it's anti-fungal. Both my brother (who has to wear heavy boots for his job) and I got rid of fungus this way. Even my M.D. said Tea Tree works according to her patients.

I tried every natural remedy out there to no avail. My regular doc said "it's just cosmetic" uggh I was mad, especially because I was embarassed to show her. I finally went to a podiatrist and he made me feel a lot better and I have something topical. I am breastfeeding or he would have given me something oral too. The sooner the better to see a doc. It can travel from nails to bottoms of your feet or vice versa. He didn't mention laser.

Hi M.,

There's a pill you can take, but it sometimes affects the liver--so I haven't tried it. My sister took it with some results. I got Penlac from my doctor. You keep the nail cut short and cleaned out underneath, then paint this stuff on top and underneath. No polish. This topical medicine takes time--especially if you have a bad case,--but it works. Keep the nail dry. Good luck.

This may sound crazy, but I've heard from several different sources that putting Vicks Vapo-rub on your toes at night & then covering up with socks will get rid of toenail fungus. It's a lot cheaper than a laser treatment, so I think it would be worth a try! Good luck, and let us know if it works!
