To Those of You That Make Handmade Items to Sell...

I have been thinking about starting up my own business for a while now. I would probably mainly sell things on the Internet. Those of you that do this sort of thing, are you actually making any money? Is it worth the time and effort? I enjoy sewing and other crafts and think it would be great if I could actually make money at it, but am just curious if I would spend more time making things and not get that great of a return on it. Thanks for your input!

What can I do next?

I do not sell handcrafted items at all..but I have bought several on www.etsy.com..I just wanted to support what Lisa had said about that website. I visit numerous times a day to see what new items have been listed!

I don't sell but my friend Kim started a nursing cover business five years ago and she's making a good living.

You can check out her website.... and I think there are Mom-links on there too... she's with a group of business moms and they share info. Not sure how she got into this group but I believe you can find it on line.

Her web address is...

I have my online business selling items and my sister does as well.

We have our shops on Etsy, and while we can't say it is enough to make a living, we do have enough to pay the gas bills every now and then.

It is a lot of hard work, learning how to photograph and list your items just right, promoting and having excellent products and customer service.

Etsy has a great online newspaper called the Storque, and they have a series about making it your full time business called "quit your day job" as well as other helpful articles.

Here are our sites so you can see how we have done and here is the Storque articles. There are lots of great tips on the forums as well as a wiki and help guides. I am a mentor on the site and can always help if you need.
