Hi Mamas /Dads

I am moving house next week and haven't even starting packing yet.
This is our second move since 8 months !!
We thought we had found a great house only to realise that it costs a small fortune to heat and high gas bills travelling in and out to town.
So here we are 8 months later moving back into town.
So before I take to the bed with mental exhaustion ,any tips on a smooth move would be very much appreciated.

X B. k

Soooo sorry to hear this!!!

DO NOT TAKE ANYTHING WITH YOU YOU HAVEN"T UNPACKED SINCE YOU MOVED!!! If you haven't touched it - you don't need it.

If the kids have outgrown the clothes and the toys - donate or sell them.

Pack one room at a time. Label each box which room it is for.
Take pictures of valuables or collectibles and pack them individually and marked with some obscure name instead of "collectible" (especially if you are having a company come move the boxes).

Good luck!!

Move the stuff you want, sell or give away or throw away the stuff you dont want to move.
I so downsized our kitchen after our last move. We only have 4 plates and 4 bowls..... DONT keep things you NEVER use.

Have a box/ suitcase full of 1 week of essentials. 1 set of cutlery, 1 set of plates a cup and a mug, a pot a pan, a set of bedding, 2 towels, three sets of clothes, toiletries and meds. This can get unpacked first, and used repeatedly, leaving you to unpack the rest in an orderly fashion.

Deep clean and paint the new premises before you move in. Its hard to wash a ceiling when there are boxes around.

Send the kids and the pets off to grandmas, so you don't have them underfoot.

Shaving cream or soap on the windows is a great temporary measure for privacy while you get your curtains up.

See if you can purge before you move. It is really much easier that way.

Be prepared to purge after you move, that dinning room set might be too big for the new space etc.

Good luck to you and yours,

B., we will be moving in the next few months, too, and I'm dreading it (we moved into this house 2 years ago and it seems waaaaay too soon to be moving again!). However, when we moved last time, I got some really good recommendations from Mamapedia moms, as follows:

1) Pack according to the FlyLady's checklist: http://www.flylady.net/d/br/2012/05/21/moving-tips/
http://www.flylady.net/d/getting-started/flying-lessons/m...
Start now, do everything she says - I PROMISE YOU, it works!

2) If you will be doing the moving yourself (vs hiring movers), compromise and use U-Haul's service for hiring guys to help you load and unload the truck. I think it was around $200 or so, for 2 guys to help us for 4 hours? Anyway, what a HUGE help they were. I made sure that I had everything packed and labeled as per FlyLady's instructions, and then labeled all the rooms in our new home, and so the U-Haul guys were able to just put the boxes exactly where they were supposed to go in our new home, and they got the heavy furniture moved in. SO much easier than trying to get every friend in existence to come over, paying for pizza and beer, etc. LOL

Anyway, those two suggestions will make your move as painless as it can be, in my experience. Good luck!!
