I am considering using the Sylvan learning Center to help my 9 YO with math. Please tell me about your experiences with them, the good and the bad. Did your child benefit from the tutoring? Was it worth the high cost? Would you use them again? How long did it take before your child began to improve?

Thanks moms

My son went to Sylvan when he was in the 1st grade, he is now in the 5th grade. He was having problems in reading. He went twice a week for an hour each day and I did improvement within a couple months. He had some great instructors and that helped. I know it is pricey but for us it was the only option as his teacher wasn't very helpful with other options. I know of another student has gone for the last 3 years for math and reading and her mother credits Sylvan for getting her as far as she is. Hope I could help.

We used tutors too, and it helped, but we used Club Z. It was a little less expensive and the tutor came to the house, which was very convenient. They bent over backwards to help us. When one of the tutors didn't quite mesh with my son they happily switched to another to make sure we were happy.

If your son has a learning disability, I would not recommend Sylvan. You would be better off spending money on a private tutor who specializes in the specific learning problem. However, if your son is a slow learner, is a little behind, or just needs extra practice to get it, Sylvan is a great place. Sylvan has a very specific way to figure out what your child needs to work on, what to reteach/teach and practice, and how to judge whether or not the skill has been mastered.

I had a close friend who was VERY motivated to find help for her son, with a learning disability. She took him there, paid for all of their testing, brought him to their program, following their plan, and after 6 months saw no improvement and regretted the time, and money spent.
I took my daughter, who was an average student, but was having difficulty maintaining these grades, and specifically had Math difficulties. It was her weakest subject, and she was becoming frustrated. After 1 full school year, we saw no improvement in school. She performed well on their tests, but it did not translate to her schoolwork.

From my experience and my friend's, I would not recommend Sylvan.

Sylvan Learning Center didn't help my daughter with bringing her grades up. They thought that they helped her with bringing up her grades on their tests. I didn't agree with that so after 1 grading period I dropped Sylvan Learning Center.
