I am a single Mum to a beautiful 3 month old little girl, her father left when I was 6 months pregnant. I am feeling sad, lonely and un-important and really would like to join a support group in the Salem area. I was always so strong and independent. I am taking Paxil but not sure that it is working. Please help me, I want to be happy again.

Hi M.,

There are support groups at Beverly Hospital so you may want to look into groups at Salem Hospital, too. The groups at Beverly are really friendly. There's also a great playgroup that the Beverly Rec Dept holds weekly at the library or the YMCA has groups, too. I hope this helps. Hang in there!

you can try the rec dept or the Y for playgroups, or you can start going to story hours at the library, Barnes and Noble and Borders.. That way you will meet other moms.. It's hard being a mom, hang in there....

I'm sure you have, but you might want to check with your doctor again, since it sounds like you might have postpartum depression. If the Paxil isn't working, you might want to try a different prescription (if you can - depending on what's considered safe & if you're breastfeeding), in addition to the support groups. Hopefully, your doctor can also point you to support groups or a good therapist?

I also just wanted to say that I applaud you for actively seeking help. You're still strong & independent, but you've been through a rough patch that would throw anyone for a loop. When you're a mom, you need all the support you can get. Sometimes, you need to demand it - and it's great that you are!

Good luck to you. I hope that you find happiness again very soon.

I am not sure about groups but i do know how hard it is to have a new baby with or without the dad. I want you to try to focus on all the good and let go of the bad. If you feel you need a medication adjustment you should talk to your dr. When my 2nd child, almost 4 now, was 3 months old, her dad dropped her, by accident, he was reaching for the binkie and she wiggled and fell to the hardwood floor. She had surgeries and many years of recovery. I never admitted how hard or sad it was on me until last year when I realized just how nasty I had become always angry yelling at my older daughter (9 now) for no reason silently hating my husband for putting me through this. Once I began talking about it and realizing it was too hard I could not do it alone I went to a counselor and starting taking Lexapro. I had to adjust the dose but in time I felt better. I could cope now. I have learned to let the past go. I can not change it, but I can change the future. It is my choice. I want you to be able to do that to. Having children is the hardest job in the world, and asking for help only makes you stronger and better. Good luck with finding your group but I am here if you want to chat anytime. You are more than important your are blessed and you are a MOM. You will be happy again look at what you have not what you don't.
