Stomach Pain - Mechanicsburg,PA

Well, I just spent the overnight hours in the ER with my son. He was screaming with abdominal pain. They did blood work, urine sample, and x-ray but found nothing. Of course, while we were there, he never cried or screamed once. Everytime someone came in and asked him how he was, he said good. Anyway, we got home and after about 45 minutes of sleep, he was screaming again. On and off for the rest of the night up until now. I've given him peptobismal, motrin, heating pad, nothing seems to work. He doesn't want to drink anything.
Any advice? He was throwing up a week ago and has had diarehha for the past week so the dr. said he could have the stomach bug and some cramping with it. My son has a very high tolerance for pain so anytime he's screaming about pain, we take it very seriously.
Thanks!

I'm so sorry to hear that your little guy is so sick. It's so hard when you can't figure out how to help them. Just over a month ago I had something similar happen to me. I had a stomach flu and then about a week later I had such severe pain, I felt like I was going into labor and I'm not even pg. I almost asked my hubby to take me to the hospital. I saw the dr and she said I had viral gastritis. She said that the acid in my stomach was out of whack and causing the distress...trust me, nothing you did for your son would have helped me either. I had to take a Prevacid 1x/day for a month. I felt better in days, although when I missed a dose a week into it my nausea returned. Give your sons' dr a call and see what they say. I hope you all find relief soon!

Best wishes,
B.

Hi J.,

Seeing your son in pain is very difficult. Hopefully, it is a bug that will run its course. Gas can be extermely painful too until it shifts.

A few questions for you. How old is your son? Are his Bowel Movements usually regular or does he have constipation with hard stools? He could be constipated and be having diarrhea at the same time. ( as I said, I dont know his age)

MOTRIN can be caustic to the stomach and cause MORE pain especially if taken on an empty stomach.

Has he been moving his bowels regularly prior to the diarrhea episodes and vomiting?
Did he have any fever with these symptoms?

Has he eaten anything out of the ordinary?
What was he vomiting( color) and what color was the diarrhea? Any stool tests done???

Hydration is important so if he wont drink, juice pops, pedialyte or flat ginger ale may be to his liking, avoid carbonated drinks.

Sometimes a warm bath is relaxing and can be helpful to take his mind off hurting until this passes.
Will say a prayer for you and yours.
Justine

My daughter and I had that stomach bug a few months back. It is unbearable. I too have a very high pain tolerance, but the cramping is nothing I ever felt before. It was worse than the 2 children I delivered. My doctor said it was from the muscles getting aggreviated from throwing up and diarreha. It hurt to even eat, because the stomach muscles hadn't worked at digesting foods for awhile. My suggestion is eat very very small amts. of food or beverage. I literally ate 1/2 a saltine and two sips of juice/gatorade every 15-30 minutes for a whole day. This way my stomach wouldn't have to work too hard. Then move on to soft foods, but minimal amts. It is painful at first but the muscle spasms will get better. It took about a week until I felt like myself again. My daughter and I also took coke syrup to settle our stomachs. The pharmacist recommended it. It is behind the counter so ask the pharamacy. You only take a minimal amount and sip it with ice every few hours. This helped settle the nausea. I hope this helped you out and I hope your son feels better.
