Stinky Bm's and Gas

My son is almost 2 mos old and is mostly breastfed with a little formula. He has extremely smelly gas and his bms smell bad as well. I have heard that bm's should not smell bad at this point esp. while breastfeeding. I have also heard that this could mean he is not healthy. His bms are liquid not hard. Any insight would be helpful, thanks.

I dont know how much formula you give him, but any amount of formula makes smelly poops. Something that you are eating, which is coming through the milk, could also be the cause of this. Or it could just be his unique digestive system.

Smelly poop is only a health concern if it is a sudden problem he did not previously have. If hes has always been like this, I would worry about his health.

Liquid poop is normal for a 2 month old. They only get solid once solid food is started, or if the baby is given only formula.

Even though he is not getting much fomula, even a little can make his poop smelly. My midwife told us that baby gas can always be smelly even when poop wasn't. We were lucky, not much scent, but my sister-in-laws 2nd son always had very stinky gas and he is a wonderful and healthy little boy.

It's probably smelly because of what you're eating. Any gassy food you ingest will get passed on to him, such as broccoli or cabbage or beans. If that's not the case, you can always raise your concerns to your pediatrician.

Soft, yellow BM is totally normal for a baby! I'd worry if he had hard stools. Even after solids were introduced, my kids still had soft stool but not as liquidy as on breastmilk. I don't how much formula your baby is on, but even a little could give him gas if he is sensitive to cow milk. Also, you could try cutting out dairy from your own diet to see if that helps. Talk to your pediatrician, I think you'd have to go dairy free a week or two before you'd notice a change. Good luck!

I breastfed my baby too and the runny bm is normal. His pediatrician said that breastmilk is like a laxative so until he has more formula, or food, his bm's probably will not be hard. And stinky---my sons stunk sooo bad!!! I dont think you have anything to worry about...just get a good diaper genie or deoderizer for the trash barrel!!!

What you describe is normal for a mostly breastfed baby. Once the baby's diet changes to formula and/or solid foods like cereals, fruits, veggies, and meats, the stools will change. Can't guarantee they'll smell less though! :-) If you find something that makes poo not smell, you've got yourself quite a money-maker!!! :-)

At two months your babies GI system is still just developing. I think at this age, the stools should be soft yellowish, and perhaps gooey but not too liquidy and definitely not hard. Have you tried cutting out dairy just to see if he has a sensitivity? Does he seem uncomfortable? What you are eating is what he is eating, so I would perhaps try to stick to a bland diet for a couple of weeks and see if things improve. If you are eating lots of meat proteins and leafy green veggies, this could affect the smell. If things don't get better, I would ask your pediatrician about it. Whatever you do, try not to go with Soy formula for boys. You can do some research about soy and hormones etc. on the internet. But what I've found online wasn't good. Best to you!

My sons poops were so liquidy- I was nervous too, but Dr said it was fine. He also has such smelly gas. I couldn't believe it. Don't worry... I know easier said than done.

A.,

Breastfed poops don't smell as long as the baby is only breasfed. Once you introduce food or formula all bets are off. My daughters poop was always a bit on the loose side but not runny. As for the smell it could just be the formula. If you are concerned I would ask your doctor.
