Starting Solids - Chicago,IL

About 2 weeks ago we started our dd on solids. Rice cereal, then bananas and now sweet potatos. Well, she just doesn't seem to be into it. There isn't any crying involved or tantrums. Just not opening her mouth to accept the food. When I am able to get some in by using my finger or quickly catching her off guard when she opens her mouth, she kind of grins and swallows. Since starting the solids I have noticed her making smacking noises with her lips and mouth, but when I think she may want to try it again, no dice. At first I thought maybe she wasn't hungry, but she eats when I give her the breast after our solid food attempts. I guess I am concerned because all the literature I've read says a baby will need more nutrition after 6 months then breastfeeding alone can provide. Also, everyone I have talked to says their kid gobbled up the solids from day one. Has anyone else experienced a solid food boycott and what solutions did you come up with. Or, do I even need to be worried about this and just be thankful I can avoid making purees for now. Other than the solids she is thriving and doing all kinds of really cool stuff lately like motor skills, standing from sitting, sitting up all by herself, pincer grasp and talking up a storm. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi D.,

My daughter was interested in eating between 8-9 months and my son at
10-11 months. They are both extremely healthy to-date; my daughter nursed until she was three years old and gets a cold once a year. My son has had two colds since he was born and just turned two.

Remember that babies are so instinctual and each on their own developmental timeline. If you continue to offer without any expectations, she will let you know when the time is right.

Good luck!

Barbara

if she's not ready, don't worry. get a vitamin like polyvisol for iron & she'll be fine bf. my daughter wasn't interested unti old enough for table food at 1, my son is 7 mos too and has only a passing interest in actually eating, although the spoon is a big hit :) BM is best and plenty of children thrive on that alone for the first year. Congrats on making it this far, it sounds like your daughter is doing great.

My second daughter was a little reluctant to solids at first. Remember to them this is something foreign and it may take time to get used to it. Just keep trying and she will eventually eat. No one lives on milk alone. Each child is individual. There is now set date on when they should reach each milestone in their life no matter what their age. Your daughter seems perfectly normal to me. Just keep trying and be patient and before long you will not even remember this phase.

I would not worry about it too much. It just takes some getting used to. You are introducing her to the first easiest solids. Try mixing a little breast milk in with the food, she may take it easier? But as long as she is eating enough breastmilk I think she is OK as far as nutrition. The first few months of intro. to solids is just her getting used to the new tastes and her digestive system learning to process it all. Good luck!
