My son is 2½ and potty training, doing a great job. However, he is actually too big to sit on the little potty chairs and does not want to sit on the toilet seat ring insert that he should be sitting on. He likes to sit right on the "big boy" toilet and goes every time. However, I can't get him to lean far enough forward to avoid him making a mess on the floor by peeing through the space between the toilet seat and toilet itself. I don't really want to suggest that he stand and play those games because I have a 20-month-old daughter who is also potty training and does well sitting right on the "big girl" toilet as well. If she sees her brother standing, she WILL think she can stand to pee, too. I also don't want them to think they can stand to do #2. (Just don't want anything to ruin the good thing I have going on here!) So, the question would be if anyone knows of any kind of splash shield that fits right on a regular toilet or of any contraptions that I can do myself to block that space between the toilet seat and toilet itself. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated as potty training can be frustrating enough without having to clean up a mess on the floor even when they DO use the toilet!

A friend I knew used to put wadded up toilet paper between her sone's legs to block the stream.
Can he sit facing the wall? I don't know if that would be too uncomfortable or just not work.
Yes, I too had my boy sit backwards--that worked well for us. Also, have you tried to have him stand up? Maybe for him this will be easier. You can put cereal in the toilet for "target practice". It does work!
I have a little boy that I'm sorta working with, and I have him sit on the toilet backwards. They don't fall in, and it doesn't ever get out of the bowl. My parent's did it for all us kids, and I'll prolly do it with all of mine...works great so far.
I do daycare in my homne, and I have a little boy who is going through a similar thing. I put a wash cloth between the rim and the toilet seat, as well as tell him to hold his "sausage" down and aim at the water. This helps but sometimes the cloth gets too wet and I still have a mess to clean up. Hope this helps you some.
I just tell my 3yo to make sure "that guy's pointing down!"

I don't know of any splash shields for a regular toilet, but my daycare provider offered an excellent suggestion when we were potty training our son. Instead of sitting him on the toilet the same way we do, she suggested sitting him on the toilet so that he faces the back of the toilet (so he is basically straddling the toilet) that way there is more room and usually very little mess to clean up. It's a bit of a pain because it does pretty much require complete removal of pants, but it really did the trick until our son could get better control of where he was going. Hope that helps. the only thing i did was to have plently of rugs for around the toilet and washed them every chance i got. i found most of them at rummage sales so i didn't have to worry about the cost of throwing them away. but you could get the cheap braided rugs at walmart and wash them every day. you son will learn to sit back further as he gets a little older.
Tami - I do licensed daycare and one of my boys had the same problem. This may sound odd, but what we did was we had him sit on the potty backwards. That way he was still sitting but he was making it in the potty because he could see what he was doing and that way too, he was also facing the correct way for when he got tall enough to stand. I have three boys and they learned by standing up first. Then you get the splashes off the back anyway. They do have toilet seats with splash gaurds. I think they are for the handicap but they would work for potty training as well.
My son also sits backwards. Instead of taking his pants off all of the way, however, I only remove one shoe and take that leg out of his pants and underwear. That makes it a little less time consuming when getting him dressed again. Good luck!
My MIL had this idea and I thought that it was the most ridiculous thing that I had EVER heard....but it worked! When potty training my son, we set him on the toilet backwards (facing the tank). She said that was how they did it to make the transition to standing easier. If you sit him backwards but scoot him far to the front, he should be able to "aim" and not make a mess! Good luck!
Well - I don't know of a shield to help you out - but my first two children were boys - and a more experienced mom told me to just to have the boys sit toward the tank with their legs stretched out to the side. Sounds strange but it worked well. Actually even later with my girls - it gets their legs apart and keeps pee off their legs. The only real down side is they have to take their pants off. Accuracy was 100%.

I sit my son (almost 2) on the toilet backards. He has had no problems with it. My sister-in-law who does inhome daycare told me thats how she does it with her boys at daycare.
I have never heard of a splash shield for a regular toilet. My son did the same thing. We used to tell my son to hold his ""wee wee" down so that his pee would go in the toilet. It takes a lot of practice. Until then keep some paper towels and disinfectant wipes in the bathroom.
Have him sit backwards on the potty, then he doesn't need 2 hands to hold on, he can push his "pee pee" down so it doesn't make a mess. You can even put in a fruit loop or cheerio for him to aim at.
I know of nothing specific for the toilet to prevent what you are talking about, and had the same issue with my know 6 year old, but having him stand won't confuse your daughter, my daughter wanted to stand to pee also and I would just explain how boys and girls are different and we girls aren't lucky enough to get to stand and pee that we have to sit, of course she didn't like that idea and even once tried to stand and pee :) but once she discovered it didn't work for girls like it does for boys she never tried it again, it was pretty funny, she was a little grossed out by the fact it went down her leg instead of into the toilet LOL. I would say search the internet, good luck.
sounds gross I know, but teach him to "push it down" Once they get the hang of it, it works very well. Good Luck!
