Son Keeps Arms Straight

I need some help!! My 2 1/2 month old son will keep his arms straight and will sometimes keep his fists balled up. I thought it was because we hold him so much so I started doing tummy time (its been 7 years since I had a baby so I've kinda forgot everything!!) and he will keep them straight against his body unless we move them. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it normal? Like I said, its been 7 years since I've had a baby, but I don't remember my daughter doing this!! Also, he HATES tummy time!! He'll lay there for a little bit but then he'll start crying til he's picked up!! Does anyone have any advice to get him to enjoy tummy time?! It worries me that he isn't pushing himself up yet and I feel guilty for not starting it sooner!!

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thanks ladies!! He can move his arms on his own, its just when we put him on his tummy he seems to get frustrated so I'll move his arms in front of him. His next appointment is next month, but I might just call his doctor. The main reason I'm worried is one of my cousins has a baby about 7 weeks older than my son and he's already trying to crawl! I know all babies go at their own pace, but it still worries me!

He's only 10 weeks old. I don't know that he should necessarily be "pushing" himself up yet.

Lots of babies get frustrated with tummy time. If they are used to being on their backs, being on the tummy is a whole different perspective on the world. Until they figure out how to lift or roll over, it can be frustrating.

Let him grip your fingers. Give him different toys and textures to explore and grab. Bend and raise his little arms while he's on his back after bath time or diaper change. Just play with your baby.

I wouldn't be overly concerned about this just yet. He's still pretty new.
Not all babies get things figured out at the same times.

He should have a well-baby check up soon, right? I would bring it up then. If all other exams have been fine and they didn't detect any issues with muscle tone, etc, I wouldn't needlessly worry. You can always make an appointment sooner if it will make you feel better and ease your mind.
There's never any harm in that.

Best wishes.

It is highly unusual for a 4 month old to be crawling although at 4 months they should be pushing themselves up from their stomach. At 2 1/2 months, as long he's pooping, peeing, and smiling he is doing fine.

I guess I shouldn't say my cousins little boy crawls, more like scoots around. Yea I don't want him to crawl either!! No, we don't swaddle him anymore. We did when he was first born but he got tired of it after 2 weeks!! Not sure why he does it but he'll do it when he's sitting up, laying down and when he's being held. He doesn't do it all the time, but enough that I've noticed it.

My DS is 11.5 so I can't recall any of those first year milestones with any accuracy. Having said that, it sounds like a legitimate question to pose to your pediatrician. He should be going in pretty regularly still for well infant checkups and shots but you may not even want to wait until his next appointment. For your own peace of mind you may want to call the office and at least ask the doc or the physicians assistant. Best of all to you and thoughts to your. :-) S.

I'd HATE it if my 7 week old tried to crawl. That's awful! Don't be wishing that on your baby!!

Do you swaddle him? There's a wrap that a lot of moms use that keep their arms tight. My niece did the same thing with her arms when they were swaddling her. Once they stopped swaddling, she started bending her arms more.

I would have the Ped check that out with the Arms. Can he move them at all? or is he choosing not to?

With the tummy time, some kids like it some don't. My kids loved thier tummys.
