Sock Recommendations for a Child with a Possible Sensory Processing Disorder

Hi Mamas, My friend's daughter is 5 and is extremely bothered by socks. Apparently, it is the seam on the toe that drives her nuts and she won't wear them. My friend said that she bought every type of sock imaginable with no luck. Now as summer ended and the colder season is approaching quickly for them (NJ), do any of you mama's have any suggestions for socks that won't bother a sensitive child? I thought perhaps a few of you may have children with a similar issue and found the perfect brand that does not bother your child. TIA.

What can I do next?

I work with SPD kids and there are socks made for these kids. Look for them online. I heard they are terrific!

Two of my daughters really had issues with their socks!!! I bought some good thin socks from target and I also had them wear the socks inside out. Inside out was really the one thing that really helped.

It may not help for winter (but mine never cared about the cold!) Panty hose- the really cheap knee high hose without a seem in the toe. If you can get a shoe store to front you a box of the footies they use, you are set for a month or two. Our duaughter likes to roll her socks down, so the knee highs worked well. Looks strange, but we got over it.

Ug! My daughter used to drive me NUTS with the sock issue! I started buying them a size smaller than needed and pulling the top part (seam) over her toes. It helped that there was NO slack to get bunched up and it helped alot.

I'm not sure if someone else suggested this, and I don't know if such a thing exists, but they make seamless socks for people with diabetes or with problems with their feet. Try contacting your pharmacy or asking your doctor for a source, or google "diabetes" and "socks." ... I just don't know if they make them small enough for a 5yo (I'm betting they do, they just might be harder to find).

Google "seamless socks" and you'll several types to select from. You can also find other clothing for kids with sensory problems. There are also clothing lines developed for sensitive kids; here are two:

Those seams drive me nuts, too.

Your friend is in my prayers. My autistic son has the same issues. I have yet to find socks that don't bother him. He puts on his slippers to cope with his issues. Fortunately, we moved to FL a couple of years ago & he doesn't have to wear socks that often!

Hand-knitted ones? No, I have no idea where you could get some......

I hope it is just a phase; I have heard that many kids go through something like this.

She may have already tried this but how about turning them inside out so the seam wont be rubbing on the foot. I had the same problem when I was a kid and that is what my Mom did. Good luck.

Nordstroms carries seamless socks. you can try calling the shoe dept. i bought them here in Florida in the shoe dept. What about tights? or Uggs type boots (you wear them barefoot to fur for max warmth).

The only ones we have found that we found for my son (sounds like exact same deal) is Jerzees, but we have been searching everywhere lately, and can no longer find them in kids sizes. I'll try some of the other suggestions too! Thanks everyone!

Try going to Pay Less Shoes... they have so many kinds... if I recall, my daughter had some from there, from her Aunty, that didn't have seams in the toe area....

Or try Peds...

I agree with inside out. I do home childcare, and a few years back, had a set of twin girls. They were such opposites! One was a tomboy tyoe and the other a total diva girl! Diva girl was also very particular about her clothes and her socks especially. I do beleive she had some sensory issues and this was our solution...inside out. She still removed them when she was inside the house..and we searched for the softest slippers possible. Good quality tights worked better for her too (she always wanted a dress/skirt on anyways). Good quality like Lands end, etc are good ones. The seams are better.

Try boy socks. I'm not sure of the brand, but I wear my son's all the time. There is a seam, but it's up across the top of the foot and I just love them.
They do make socks with no toe seams. Just look around. I don't like them either because it feels like they rub against the toe of my shoe.
Best wishes.

You can check out SmartKnit KIDS seamless sensitivity socks at www.smartknitkids.com. I don't have personal experience with them, but have a flyer about them and woudl think it might be a good option. They come in ankle, crew and knee high styles. However, turning socks inside out is a cheaper alternative so I'd try that 1st! Good luck!
