I've found that the First Years sippy cups work best and are easiest for cleaning. They have no inserts. Get the insolated kind too so they'll stay cold longer, not sweat, and keep little hands from complaining of the cold. Whether it has an insert or not, the insert valve or the spout valve can get stiff or stuck closed, especially if cleaned in the dishwasher in such high heat. Just squeeze the insert to open the valve up or stick your pinky in the spout of the valveless cups to make sure it opens. You will get one once in a while that is stiff and that's it.
With all of that said, if your child is able to hold and tip back a bottle or sippy on their own, it's time to start transitioning to an open cup, or an old fashion sippy cup with no valve and the juice flows freely. I would save sippy cups for when you are out and about in the car. Have all snacks/juice times at the table with open cups.
