Sick Baby :( Need Advice

Okay mama's. I need advice...maybe reassurance more so.

My 16 month old baby boy woke up this morning, and he was burning up! I gave him a cool (not too cool) bath, in which he was totally miserable! After that, he ate a banana and some crackers. I gave him the normal dosage of baby IBU. I took his temp. Which turned out to be 98.7, but, add a degree, so 99.7. We did some major cuddling. He ate a few more crackers with a sippy of juice and mainly water. He still feels warm, but not nearly as bad. I just laid him down to see if he will nap, I am about 100% positive he will.

And he just got over a runny nose. Someone mentioned whooping cough to me. And now I am FREAKED out!! I looked it up and runny nose is a sign. :(:( He is due for his 15 month shots.....He turned 16 months today.

So, I guess my question is... What do I do for him? Doctor? What have been your experiences with your sick little ones?

Thanks:)

What can I do next?

Honestly sounds like just a little cold. Give him TLC and the Tylenol and he should be better in a day or so.

The cough from Whooping Cough is very unique, is he coughing like that? If it's just a fever, then keep doing what you're doing- liquids, rest and fever reducer as needed. If he's not improving by tomorrow, maybe put a call in to your doctor's nurse to get advice from, but with just a fever and runny nose, they probably will tell you to keep doing the same and to call with any changes. Good luck!

It could be just a plain cold.
Our Dr didn't get excited about temps till they were > 104.
Monitor symptoms and make him comfortable as you can.
Keep him well hydrated.

First, to ease your mind - this is a video clip from the tv show "The Doctors" - it will let you hear what Whooping Cough sounds like in a baby: http://www.5min.com/Video/How-Baby-Whooping-Cough-Sounds-...

You didn't mention him having a cough at all, so if he doesn't have a cough, that should make you feel better. Oftentimes when my babies are teething they'll get short-lived fevers and runny noses. I usually just give them some Infant Ibuprofen to help keep them comfortable, if they are truly miserable.

You'll find that oftentimes doctors can't tell you exactly what is wrong with your baby, and you'll learn that this is one of the most common, yet frustrating parts of parenthood.

Hope your little guy feels better soon. My son turns 16 mos next week, and he's getting a TON of teeth right now, so he's also not a happy camper.

Runny nose can be a sign of everything, and a sign of nothing. Has your son coughed, at all? If his temperature is going down and is not showing any other signs of illness...I don't think you need to call the Dr. on a Sunday. If he starts coughing deeply, throwing up, the fever gets worse, he won't eat or drink anything, call your Dr. today. If not, call your Dr. tomorrow and see if they'd like to see him.
Good luck!!

Well, if he starts coughing and sounds like he's barking, THAT'S whooping cough. Watch him closely and get him to the doctor if he starts that.

He won't be able to get his shots until he is well, by the way.

Good luck!

I am looking to see if he was actually coughing. Poor baby, but he could be teething, have a cold, My second son had whooping cough years ago. It was terrible. He could barely breathe from coughing. That I raced him to the hospital for. Runny noses can also come after a big crying spell or allergies etc.etc.You poor thing, it's hard being a mama. You are doing everything right.

It's always best to take his temp before you give any ibuprofen or tylenol, just to be sure it's him and not your sensation. Secondly, a small fever is a good sign - it means the immune system is working to fight whatever he's got. Usually the pediatricians tell you not to give anything for a low grade fever. You really don't need to panic, and you can treat a higher fever with meds and cool baths. If a child does have a high fever, then cuddling can make them even warmer! If he's miserable and needs affection, that's one thing. But taking a few layers off is a good idea. You're in Missouri and it's hot, so having a toddler feel warm is not unusual!

He was eating, which is good, and he was drinking water, which is even better. Really sick kids aren't usually doing either of those things. Kids get runny noses all the time. It's not fun but it's not usually the sign of anything dangerous. Runny noses indicate a million things, and whooping cough Whooping cough is a very distinctive cough and you would absolutely know if there was something that serious going on. It's also part of the DPT vaccine - the P is for pertussis.

Don't let people scare you with all their "helpful" advice - everyone's an expert, it seems, and everyone's heard some horror story on TV about a kid with this crisis or that crisis. Most of the time, your child will go through the normal stuff. It's hard when you're a new mom to stay calm and have perspective, because you just don't have enough of these experiences yet. It gets easier.

Remember also that your doctor's office has an advice line, with either a nurse or a doctor calling back. Use it before you go rushing in - they will let you know whether your child needs to be seen right away or not.

As long as his fever is going down I think he'll be ok. My son(2.5) had bad fever last weekend and we took him to urgent care and they didn't do anything for him they just said to keep him hydrated and give medicine as directed. So after too many episodes of Thomas and some major cuddling hes back to normal. Whooping cough..idk.. is he coughing? Sometimes you can call your health care provider without going in and ask for advice...

My 2&1/2 yr old just got over 7days of a fever and has a stuffy nose but is on the mend. Yest was the first day she didn't have a fever since last Sat and now my almost 5yr old started a fever yest. and also a stuffy nose. Just make sure he's drinking plenty, keep an eye on the fever. I always call the dr after 3 days of the fever unless the medication is not keeping it down or they are acting miserable. For my youngest, I took her to the dr on wednesday and she said just an enterovirus. Then fever was still present on friday so had to bring her in again, saw same dr but not my kid's regular ped and this time she said sinus infection and wanted to do antibiotics. But said I could wait a day and see if fever broke. Fever broke and she's sounding better but still congested. Always trust your gut. If you feel like it would be better for him to be seen, have him seen. Good luck, hope he's feeling better soon.
