Severe Adverse Reactions to Vaccine in Older Child

I haven't had issues with this. However, I don't like how they stack vaccinations. Recently, I took my 11 year old and they wanted to do a Meningitis, Dtap and HPV..... I said yes to the Meningitis... and Dtap (although, now after having read more, I kinda wished I skipped that one)

as for the HPV, he will never be getting that one.... there just isn't enough proof about the cancer prevention behind it... (see DRMERCOLA.COM) website.. he has a lot of GREAT info on vaccinations..

Even though you know the autism/MMR link has been debunked, you're worrying about it anyway? The guy did it to get money and attention...

Be prepared to have trouble getting him in school if you don't get his shots. My son was a couple of weeks shy of his first birthday when we got his first MMR, and when we moved to a different state in middle school, I had one week to get another MMR shot or keep him home from school until I produced a letter saying I got him one. So he ended up having to get an extra one because of a few weeks.

I don't know why you would think that your son's speech delay and sensory issues have anything to do with vaccines. They don't. Rather than looking for reasons to justify not getting him vaccinated, either decide to do it or not to do it. You don't have to use the regular schedule. You can draw the schedule out. Or you can decide to take your chance that he will never get whooping cough or the other diseases.

We've had a couple of moms write on here about their children being in the hospital very, very ill from whooping cough. They hadn't gotten their children vaccinated either, and I'm sure they felt really bad that they made that decision after all their child and family went through. This is part of what you need to consider when you decide not to vaccinate. Whooping cough is REAL - the theory that guy made up about vaccines and autism is NOT.

The second isn't research at all, and the third links to an article that opens with this statement:
"Measles found in the intestines of a cohort of autistic children with bowel disease should not be perceived as proof of an association between the measles vaccine and autism, Stephen J. Walker, Ph.D., stressed at the 5th International Meeting for Autism Research. "

Research, actual studies published in peer-reviewed publications, that can be replicated is what people are asking for. It is hard to provide because it doesn't exist.

What current actual RESEARCH BASED STUDIES are still showing AN ACTUAL LINK between vaccines and autism? Can you please provide links? I'd like to read them. I was under the impression that there were no actual studies showing that vaccines cause autism.

My son recently had an MMR (9 years old). They wanted to do others but because of my daughter having a severe reaction to this same vaccine I chose to wait. A very dear friend of mine has a daughter who suffered seizures within 36 hours of receiving the recommended vaccines at 6 months (She received multiple vaccines) and has permanent short term memory damage. I am not against vaccinations, but I do believe they give too many at a time. I think you are wise to get him vaccinated before your trip but I would do it in the summer so if there are any issues he has plenty of time to get over it. Personally I will not allow my kids to have more than one vaccine at a time. Since the MMR is a combo of three vaccines, that's all mine got at that visit. I also wait a minimum of three months between vaccines and prefer to wait 6.

Due to your concerns, I would request that each vaccine in the MMR be given separately rather than all in one shot. That dramatically reduces the risks of vaccine injury.

EDIT: Huh, looks like you're right. They no longer spread them out. My 3 year old nephew had his separated because my SIL is so paranoid.

And now I see that there's an MMRV vaccine... Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella all in one. One reason that they should be together is that there are actually fewer chemicals that are harmful to the children. Fewer times the child has to be poked means less "filler" chemicals and additives and other ingredients in addition to the medication.

The problem with "links" is that when most people start showing signs of ASD and Sensory Processing Disorder and other related issues is the same time that the vaccinations are recommended to be given. The symptoms would be showing up regardless of those vaccinations. They're not causal, they're coincidental unless you can prove an allergy to an ingredient that was used. And mercury/thimiserol is no longer used. The other ingredients affect people in such small stats that they shouldn't be a concern. More children get sick and die from peanut allergies.

EDIT AGAIN: Andrew Wakefield was a quack. He was not debunked by a reporter, he was debunked by SEVERAL independent scientific studies. He wasn't just "given a bad rap." He was scientifically disproved over and over and over. He has lost his license to practice and is no longer a doctor. The man is scum. It goes far, far beyond a reporter breaking the news about what he did... faking results and faking subjects in his non-existent studies. He tried to connect MMR to causing Crohn's disease prior to Autism but his peers laughed at him and were all, "LOLWTF? Srsly? Nuh uh!" The Lancet where he originally published his hoax retracted the original article recently. This is real and this is serious. There's so much that the general public doesn't realize or know about this hoax that Wakefield perpetuated. But trust me, he was not simply "misunderstood." He was not persecuted unfairly. He was scientifically disproven and then brought to court and a judge took away his license to practice. Anyone who values his opinion after that... well... I feel pity.

He set back research on Autism for DECADES and my daughter has to be the one to deal with that. My friends' children have to deal with that.

Not only are autistic children suffering but parents all over the world including the United States have dead and/or severely ill children because they didn't get necessary vaccines for their children because of that pig.

My child is selectively vaccinated. He recently got the final dose of the MMR at age 6. My child is in school and has been in public school since age 3. There is no issue with him being vaccinated the way he is. My child is autistic, however I feel he was born the way he is. This latest vaccination is the first he received since he was a year old. This is the best decision for our child. *Note, my son is nonverbal and doesn't communicate thoughts/feelings/emotions so he could not tell us if even the slightest issue would arise which is why we do 1 at a time.* Just an FYI my son was/is fine after getting this last vaccination.

Do your research and look into what is recommended when you go to the Carribean. Always do what is best for your child and don't allow fear mongering nor the masses to skew your decisions.

You should look more into Andrew Wakefield. The reporter, Brian Deer, lied to make him look bad. There's way more to the story, but you don't hear about it on the news unless it's in support of vaccines.
I would not take any risk with your child.

Since the company that produces the MMR no longer makes the separate components, you will not be able to ask for it separately.

With an older child, I think the biggest risk you run is an allergic reaction, which can happen at any time to anything, of course, but does happen with vaccines. However, since you're only giving one vaccine, it would certainly be easy to identify a reaction if he had one. Just watch your son carefully and be aware what reactions are normal and what are not (for example, a low-grade fever 3-7 days after the MMR vaccine is completely normal - a high fever immediately after the vaccine is not).

my kids got the mmr at 2 my other kid got the mmr at 3. they are fine.

there are no current reliable studies taht show vaccines cause any autism developmentat delay speech delay.

I used a modified Sears schedule, but what I found more important was to have an open dialog with our pediatrician about OUR child. My DD got her MMR at 1 week shy of 1 year old for travel. The only vax she's had an adverse reaction to was the Dtap and that was lethargy and fever and she recovered within one day and was seen by the pediatrician immediately upon experiencing symptoms (she had gotten a dose when she was younger, so it is a mystery why she reacted this time). I also know families who held off on the MMR and still got an Autism diagnosis, so I refer you to my first sentence. Discuss your concerns with his doctor. You can space them out, separate a few of them, and be cautious without not getting them at all. MMR is no longer one you can separate, but you can get it by itself and then get other vaccinations a month later.
