I'm attending a bridal shower in a couple weeks, and I though it might be neat to have part of my gift be a collection of bits of advice for the new couple. If you're willing to share, I'll happily take quips or quotes that you've heard and found funny or useful yourself, or your own words of advice for newlyweds. Thank you in advance for sharing your insight!

cute idea....my bridal party did something like this for me at my shower - had each guest write down some advice, quote, etc. One that was pretty funny to me was "May all your ups and downs be in between the sheets" - a little dirty perhaps - suppose it depends on the relationship between you and the bride. have fun!

"Don't let the sun set on your anger."

It's the wisest advice I was ever given before I got married. Sometimes it leads to little sleep if we're really chewing on something, but it goes a long way toward marital health. (In fact, sometimes it helps break down walls that might be there at other times of the day when you're not so tired.)

It turns out, I later found out it's in the Bible somewhere...I think. : )

communication is key, unless you truly are marrying a mind reader.
say "I love you" everyday.
support your partner in any decision they make, even if you know it's the wrong decision. It's easier to let them figure it out for themselves and not be told 'No, that's not a good idea'.

For the wedding - Take a moment to sit back and soak it all in. It goes by so fast and you want to enjoy every second that you spent however long planning it. (That was the best advice I was given before my wedding, and I use it on my two boys as well. Things go by so fast, I try not to 'wish' for a certain time period.)

My favorite saying, which has much more meaning if and when they have children, is: "The days are long, but the years are short." When I think of it, it reminds me to stop and take stock because before you you know it, the kids are teenagers and you are celebrating your 25th anniversary.

I always loved the words about marriage by Kahlil Gibran in "The Prophet".

This is also a lovely sentiment called "Love" by Roy Croft:

I love you,
Not only for what you are,
But for what I am
When I am with you.
I love you,
Not only for what
You have made of yourself,
But for what
You are making of me.
I love you
For the part of me
That you bring out.

At my own bridal shower (almost 12 years ago, now) either the host or onr of the guests (I can't remember) brought a large basket of kitchen utensils and household items and each guest chose one item and included a related quote. For example, the person who chose the large ladel said, "When you're scraping the bottom of the barrel (and you will) remember to work together to make it through. There will always be another barrel!" They then collected all the quotes/advice and who they were from and typed them up for me to put in my scrapbook.

If you know the host of the shower, maybe you could ask if you could do that. Twelve years later and I still love the advice *and* I still have several of the utensils!
