I moved here about a year and a half ago and have continued to see my OB GYN back home when on vacation (what a treat). Now that I know we will be staying here,I would like to find a local doctor that I can depend on.

I am looking for a doctor that is experienced, compassionate and prefer a person of faith. I don't care if they are male or female. I am looking to have another baby in the next year or so, and need someone who has a good bedside manner.

I would prefer responses of mothers who have had good experience with pregnancy and delivery. I also must metion that I live in Northwest OKC, but am very close to Edmond. I am willing to travel a little bit if it is for the best care.

What can I do next?

I go to Dr Karen Wilks at Center for Womens Health at Mercy Hospital. She is wonderful. She has delivered my two boys and would not have it any other way. If she is not taking new clients, then any of the other doctors are also worth going too.

S., see my post about Dr. Joe Paul Merritt, M.D. He has a wonderful, compassionate and understanding, bedside manner and yet, is very professional. He has a great reputation, even with hardware suppliers for the medical profession. Dr. Merritt's phone number is ###-###-#### and he is located in the Deaconess Medical Building just South of Baptist Hospital. Dr. Merritt has been my OB/Gyn since 1995 and I would never consider consulting another Gyn.

Tell him A. sent you.

I would suggest The Center for Womens Health at Mercy Hospital. I personally use Dr. May-Li Barki, she has delivered both of my children and I just love her and her nurses. I have also seen a few of the other doctors in this practice (when Dr. Barki was out) and so have some of my friends and they are all wonderful!! The phone number there ###-###-####. Good luck!!

I am 28 and a stay at home mom of 2 with another due June 8. I have used Dr. Sumeeta Nanda with all of my pregnancies. She is a person of faith and has excellent bedside manner. She is very patient and willing to answer questions and doesn't force you to do something you don't want(such as epidurals and certain prenatal tests). I have really enjoyed her as my OB/GYN and would highly recommend her. She is located at Integris Baptist Hospital, just off NW Expressway. Her number is ###-###-####.

I would second avoiding Lakeside. I have had issues with support staff there and a terrible experience around a miscarriage. I am seeking another OBGYN, which is why I ended up on this board. In addition to rough emotional tratment by support staff there, I was billed for a "phone consult" during my miscarriage- it was over a weekend- which was denied coverage by BCBS insurance.... like getting a paper cut, pouring lemon juice and salt on it and being asked to pay for the pleasure.

I wish I had positive experiences to report, but trust me, if you ever find yourself in a similar unpleasent situation, these reviews are also important- those that stick by you when it is bad news as well as good- that is what I am seeking.

Hi S.,

I recommend The Lakeside Womens Group. I use Dr Deborah Huff and have had a wonderful relationship with her for 19 years. I went through problems with conceiving and then had a beautiful baby Boy that is now 16 and a Daughter that is 12. There are 12 or more women Ob/Gyn in the group and they are all well thought of.

Hope this helps and welcome to Okla.

Dr. Wayne Houk is a great doctor. He is located in the Northwest Medical Tower located just behind (south) Integris Baptist Medical Center. My son was born with a congenital heart defect (CHD) that we didn't know about until an hour or so AFTER he was born. At the check-ups, his heartbeat was alwayws very strong and with his CHD it was difficult to see on the ultrasound. My son, Seth, had to be transferred to Children's when he was about 5 hours old. The next morning Dr. Houk came in and sat with me for about 30-45 minutes and just held me and let me cry. Afterwards, he told the nurse if I could go to the bathroom, eat and keep it down, and walk, under the circumstances he would release me. I should probably mention Seth was born by c-section. I forced myself to do all 3. He was born at 2:31 pm on Sunday afternoon and I was out at 10 am the next morning. Dr. Houk kept checking on Seth while he was in the hospital (for 15 days). The day Seth had his open heart surgery (8 days old), Dr. Houk tlod me to call him and let him know how he was. Well I called fully expecting to leave a message with his nurse (they are great too). Not the case. They pulled him from an appt and I spoke to him. Anyway, probably more than you wanted to know, but I thik he is a great doctor! To this day, he always asks about Seth at my appts. Seth is 5 years old now. Dr. Houk's number is ###-###-####. You can tell him I sent you!!! :-) K.

I like my OB GYN, Dr. Mary Martin. She is very knowledgeable and I my experience with her through my first pregnancy and delivery was very positive. She is devout Catholic. She is affilitated with St. Anthony's in downtown OKC, so the drive may make it not your best option. ###-###-#### 608 NW 9th St. Ste 4210 OKC 73103

Hi Seretta, I highly recomend Dr. Larry Kinchloe. He delivers at Baptist Hospital and he is WONDERFUL! He delivered my twins, we never felt rushed in his office, he always took the time to go over everything with us and answer questions, when I was on bedrest for months and just wanted to give up, he continually cheered me on. I remember one time being in his office and I just started crying and couldn't stop, he sat down on his stool in front of me he just patted my leg and handed me tissues and just kept talking to me til I got it together again.
He is a no nonsense doc and doesn't pull any punches with you.
Good luck in your search and I wish you only the best.

I absolutely love the midwives at OU medical center, specifically Ann Stewart. I was seeing an OB/GYN with my first pregnancy and at 7 months pregnant I switched b/c I waited for hours nearly every visit to see my OB - Dr. Andrea Doeden- and then when I would finally see her I was always rushed or just had to see the nurse and then when I called to ask questions that the nurse could not answer, the doctor called back and left a message saying she was to busy to play phone tag and that I needed to wait until my next appt. to ask my questions. Well, I didn't make another appt. and switched to the midwifes and wow, what a differance in care!! Ann Stewart would sit with me at least 30 minutes and answer my questions and she made me feel so important and my labor was so awesome. I was even able to do it without an epidural or any other medical intervention partly thanks to Ann.

The one thing I do caution you about OU Medical Center is that you need to watch the billing. They pad the billing and charge for procedures you didn't have. But to see Ann, it's worth that hastle.

I am in my first pregnancy and see Amanda K Levine, she is in Edmond. I really like her, she is in her mid 30's, she has partnered up with an OB that has been around for a very long time. She has a fairly new practice, which I like because it is easy to get an appointment. She does not rush through the office visit and is very thorough. Her nurses are great too.

I would like to warn you about Lakeside, it is a very popular OB partnership. I have friends who use doctors their and have heard many bad things. They have taken too many patients and their care has been compromised. My sister in law was having a miscarriage, her doctor would not see her for weeks and she could not get in to one of her partners. She had to go to the office and just sit there until they finally worked her in over 4 hours later! They are bad about returning phone calls, you can't switch doctors if you have problems with one in the partnership.

Hope this helps! Good Luck!

Goff & Shanbour & Associates
Oklahoma City, OK 73120
Phone Number: ###-###-####

Dr. Goff is the best OB/GYN I've ever encountered. His bed-side manner is unparalleled. When nurses themselves have babies, they ask for Dr. Goff, which says volumes about the man they work with day in and out. He is the most compassionate , caring man i have ever known... He is the reason i have my miracle baby!!! HE saved my life as well... He is a man of faith and never ever will you hear this man say a curse word or anything mean or remotely ungodlike... He is a very devout christian and you will never ever find a more caring knowledgeable doctor than Darren Goff. I Adore him!!!!

Dr. Darren Goff is so wonderful. He is thoughtful, beyond the call of duty, and very compassionate, and extremely skillful. I'm told he specializes in high rick pregnancies. He's very understanding and very kind. He is a man of faith, integrity, and honesty.
He is so wonderful that while in the hospital every time a nurse would come in the room and ask who my doctor was they would all start gushing about how great he is and how all the nurses love him and how none of them would let anyone else deliver their babies!
His office is at Mercy hospital. I don't remember his office phone number off the top of my head, but I'm sure it's in the phone book.

Hi S.,
Welcome to Oklahoma. I highly recommend Dr. Anthony Shanbour. He's been my ob with 5 babies. My first had mutiple defects and he passed away at 9 months old. Dr. Shanbour was great through all this and very supportive and has been very kind through our next pregnancies knowing we have more anxiety than the usual parents. My last pregnancy was twins. Once again he took great care of me! He is always patient and willingly to answer as many questions as I could think of. I really can't say enough nice things about him. And his nurses have been great, too. His office is next to Mercy Hospital. Hope this helps!

I love my OB, Dr. Karen Reisig ###-###-####. My daughter was born in Oct. 2006, and we are expecting a 2nd in September. She has privileges at Mercy and Deaconess, but she prefers Mercy and her office is directly across from the Mercy. I had a wonderful birthing experience, both with respect to my doctor as well as my hospital. Her staff is fabulous and very responsive, and i think that she would be very responsive to your individual needs, I tend to ask a lot of questions, and she is always helpful and listens well when I have concerns about my care.

Since you're not yet pregnant and have some time before you need to commit, I would recommend meeting a few doctors before deciding. I didn't have that option when we moved here because I got pregnant before I had a Doc and was under the gun, but I'm sure most would be willing to spend a few minutes with you. I did that with my daughter's pediatrician, and am very glad I did.
