I home school my son who has been disgnosised with Dyslexia and I am looking for a academic program that will help him. The one we have been using isn't bad but I am always looking for something better. I am also looking for support.

What can I do next?

Hi M.,
Dyslexia runs in my family... my parents were determined that I not be labeled in school unless it became absolutely necessary, but it has always been understood that I have it. Until I was much older, I never needed a different academic program and by that time we just kind of stumbled along until I figured things out. The one thing I would advise though, is that you look into the emotional and chemical effects of dyslexia. I always felt like a bit of a baby, because I would get very emotional when faced with new (usually technical like math or science) ideas. I learned in College that there is a chemical change in the brain when dyslexics are creating new neural pathways that has a tendency to also cause this enhanced emotion... who knew? If I could change one thing it would be to have know this from the beginning... I think it would have made me much more patient with myself. Good luck!

Iam so happy to hear that you are homeschooling! It makes all the difference in their lives. Okay, my 10 year old son has the same problem. I have bought many programs that cost major money that didn't work. Then a friend who has a daughter with the same problem told us about AVKO. We use a program called sequiental spelling from AVKO. You can go to their website and watch a sample. I really thought this program was to simple and not like anything I had ever used. My son can now spell much better. They also have other books besides just spelling. I hope this helps and don't get discouraged!
