Any ideas on how to pay for braces. My son is 11 yrs old and every time we go to the dentist. HE says Steven needs braces. I know he needs braces but they cost 4,000.00 and we don't have that kind of money. We couldn't even afford the payment on 4,000.00 what does other parents do when your kid needs braces and can't afford it.

My daughter had to get braces and we were so worried about paying for them. I think that most orthodontists do have payment plans and are willing to work with you. Also, I think that most orthodontists will offer a free consultation. You can ask when you call. I work at a dentist office and we refer to a couple really good orthodontists. If you feel your child really needs them, that it is more then a cosmetic thing, you could start by contacting your states health and welfare, they have programs that offer health and dental insurance to working famlies, it's a lot of paperwork but can be well worth it, you can get it even if your company offers insurance and some states allow children to have private and state so long as the child is under 5, we had it for a period of time, my husband and I were insured under his policy and the kids(we took the older ones off) got state insurance. It's something I would stongly suggest you look into.
Half my kids should get braces, but it is mainly cosmetic, there are extreem cases were it is absolutly needed, and I have choosen to not do it there teeth aren't that bad and when thier older if they want them they can pay form them themselves. Don't let the dentist make you feel bad about whatever decision you make, your childs world won't end if you choose not to
You might qualify for assistance, either on an income basis, or your hubby's disability. There is a lot of help out there, it just isn't advertized. If all else fails, there is some big talk within the government about ALL children having healthcare regardless of income. Do some google research, search within the results, you might be suprised what you find. There might even be some crazy grant out there you'd qualify for. You never know...I feel for you though. Don't be h*** o* yourself though. Your heart is in the right place. It isn't your fault our healthcare system is ridiculously over priced.

couple of ideas: talk to a few local orthodontists, many have reasonable payment plan options. Find out if your dental coverage through work also covers orthodontics. Many dental plans are less than $30/month, and include up to $3,000 in orthodontic coverage. Hope this helps.
Since you are the only one working, and your husband is disabled, have you tried applying for state Insurance? you may qulify for it. I am a insurance specialist, I file all insurance for lots of Doctor's, any questions feel free to ask
If you live in Lincoln take him to the dental college. They do great work and usually at around half the price. I hope this helps.

When I was a young girl my grandparents raised me and I know that they didn't have any extra money, because they were both on disability. I had to have braces and there was a state run program in Wyoming where I grew up that paid for everything. My regular dentist referred us to an orthodontist and he gave my grandma the information and paperwork that needed to be filled out. I would check on something like that. It has been a few years since I had this done, but I know that they have something designed to help family's that qualify and I don't see why yours wouldn! Good luck!!

The dental college is a good idea. Lincoln is a little closer for you and also has a dental college. To help with expenses, you could use flexbenefits if your employer offers it. You budget a certain amount, and then that amount is taken out in equal installments over the course of the year. But you can use 100% of the $ you budgeted for the year in January if you want. But... if you just can't afford them, he'll survive! I've seen adults with braces. I always figure their parents just couldn't afford them when they were young.
Have you ever tried to apply for Kids connection for your son or any of the state benefits? I think that you should try there. I used to work for an orthodontist and he was great at letting people make payment plans. I know that Dr. Krause in Kearney the most that he would charge you is $3300 and that is for the clear braces. The metal are $3200. But he lets you make payments the entire time they are in braces. I also think that most places will give you a free consult. Just call and ask what their consult fee is and visit them. Also your dentist might know of a cheaper place to go!
First of all, if you have a dentist you visit regularly, ask if he works with any local or near local orthodist. Often there are kind enough orthodontist that work with families who cannot afford the work....keep in mind, if you do find such a dr. they look at 'need' over want/cosmetic. Also, often these type of 'specialists' will work on a sliding fee scale, especially with a parent on disability.
Keep in mind 'need'.....I am a stay at home mom and my oldest just turned 16 and is just now getting braces, so most situations can wait and are repairable. Also, in some financial situations the child must become and adult and decide if the cost is of true benifit to them.
All parents must keep in mind with such things that we live in a society that expects 'perfection' at any costs, and has forgotten that someitmes the 'differences' or 'challenges' we or our kids face in life are what make us/them who we/they are and will become.
No kid ever died, ran to the streets or gunned people down in a school because of dental or other differences....any child who has truely active and loving parents who are THERE will over come these obsticals and be a much better human being and thier teeth won't really matter much at that point !!!!

I never got them. LOL! I was suppose to get headgear, braces, and a retainer. Never happened...
BUT I know if you live in or around Omaha you can go to creighton and go to their dental school and get work done. I know it is a significant discount cause it is students being supervised doing the work. I thought I heard around a grand. If you don't live in Omaha maybe there is a dental school in your area that does this as well. I've never heard a bad thing about it. For that matter one of my siblings gets all her work done there and she can afford a dentist.
