Seeking Input on Year-round Schooling (Huron Valley Schools)

Hi There:

I am looking for some input on the year-round schooling program through Huron Valley Schools. My daughter will be starting kindergarten in the fall and we are trying to decide where to send her. Now that our district has changed to full-time kindergarten, we are just looking at some other options. Any positive/negative input would be appreciated.

What can I do next?

I think year round schooling is too new a concept here in the states to know if it's a success or not. My take on it is that if it's widespread and all the kids in school are doing the same thing, it works. One must remember that kids feel 'judged' by their peers and it might have a negative impact on kids. If the child sees kids that go to another school getting out in June, having fun, going on vacation, they may not put in an effort just to be able to do what those others are doing. See what I mean?

But if the child is exposed only to same school playmates, schoolmates, it'll be fine.

I would make sure a year round fits in with your family plans too. Planning a vacation? You have to work it in to year round.

You may want to consider mainstream school and add a tutoring program to it like Sylvan or one of the others.

You've got options. But good luck!

Hi L.,

We are in the Hartland school district and they also have all day everyday kindergarten. I was not sure how my son would do with this schedule because five seems pretty young to be in school for so long. I went ahead and put him in this schedule and he did just fine. He was very tired for the first couple of weeks but after that he adjusted with no problem. Hope this helps with your decision. Good luck to you.

As a first grade teacher, I would highly recommend full day kindergarten. I have also taught it as well. There is a pretty big difference in skill level once kids get to first grade. Every fall I can tell which kids were in full time kindergarten and which were in part time. It will be an adjustment, and she will come home EXHAUSTED for the first few weeks, but it will pay off. This is just an opinion though, you know what is best for your daughter. Hope this helps!

My son did all day K for 3 days a week and he liked it very much and did very well. I don't think the full 5 days will be much different. We are switching from Holly to Huron Valley this year because we are much closer to Huron Valley Schools. I did read about the full time K they are starting this year, but I do believe that they will still offer 1/2 days as well. Also, a good website to check out is www.greatschools.com Good Luck with your desicion.
