Ok moms, get ready here is a good one. My 8yo daughter has been waking up with 102/103 fever for the past 3 days. Heres the kicker--- there are NO symptoms. No ache, no sniffles, no cough, no new teeth, no burning or pain when going to the bathroom no nothing but this persistant fever. I'm concidering taking her to the Dr. today but what will they say,,,"there is no symptoms it's viral" poof there goes my money for something I already knew. So what would you do?

Okay we're back from the Doctor as some of you encouraged thanks for all the advice Esp. the probiotics, and the bath ideas. That can help ease the diagnostion of the FLU!!!! This combined with asthma...I am soooo NOT thrilled. But like others we will get through it.

What can I do next?

I would call the dr and see what they say. Could be that she does have an infection somewhere but no sumptoms yet. Could also be allergy related, but I would think she would be symptomatic if that were the case. Good luck!

Hum, strange. Is she complaining of anything bothering her? Acting like she is sick or pretty much normal? Does the fever last all day or just in the AM? Any of her friends/classmates out sick?

Right now, the only thing I can think of is pollen. I'm not too sure how the tree pollen is where you are at but it is very high right now in certain areas and she could have allergies. The fever might just be her body working to fight off the allergens. If she does seem to be head stuffy, try giving her some OTC childrens Claritn and see if that helps her any. My daughter is almost 9yrs old and she used to have to take Nasanex from Feb to July!

Good luck!

My son started running a fever last week with the only symptom being a headache. I took him to the doctor and he had an ear infection. He never once complained of his ears. He has had them in the past and always complained of ear pain. I would call her doctor and get their opinion. Our doctor will usually say give it 48 hours and if they are still having a fever to bring them in. Also, noone knows better than you. I always seem to be able to tell if something is doctor worthy or not. Go with your gut feeling.

What would I do? I would give her some Probiotics to help her fight whatever her body is fighting. I would probably give her some Beta Glucan, which is an immune booster...same thing...helps body fight (I use it for something as strong as Strep, for example).

If the fever is uncomfortable to her, then and only then would I give her tylenol....otherwise, I wouldn't do it at all because when you lower the temperature, the body can't fight off whatever the problem. We have fevers for a reason, but you do need to watch it in case it gets too high. In the case of a fever, I would put her in the bath with some cut Yarrow (kind of like a giant herbal tea bath)...this will help in doing what the fever is supposed to do by killing the infection and sweat out the toxins.

Kids respond differently to different illnesses and sometimes differently to illnesses they've had before. Sometimes the fever comes first and then other symptoms present themselves. Unless, something shows itself to the doctor, they won't know anymore than you.

My youngest daughter used to get high fevers all the time with no other symptoms/pain. She would be happy as could be, except for when the lethargy would kick in from the highest point of the fever, other than, she's be singing songs, hard to keep her still. She was getting UTI's. The initial dip was always negative (where they test strip in the urine - testing done in the dr. office). Finally, one doctor, had the urine culture sent out. That came back positive.

I would go ahead and take her in if only for the Dr excuse for school. Also she may have an ear infection. Kids can get them even if they aren't babies. And sometimes there are no symptoms for them.

My niece (age 7) just had a persistent high fever last week. No other complaints except allergy related issues. The doctor did a urine sample first as it's the least invasive. That did the trick. She had a UTI. She didn't complain or have any sympotms which is odd, but she was diagnosed with a UTI and given antibiotis to take care of it. Good luck!

Anytime you have a child with a fever that high that persists beyond 24 to 48 hours, they need to be checked out by a doctor. If the diagnosis turns out to be viral, that's fine, but if it's bacterial and you just treat the fever at home, you could be risking your child's life. Bacterial infections are dangerous and not to be self-diagnosed. Low grade fevers are a different story, but high fevers can indicate serious bacterial infection or flu, as your child was diagnosed. We have become complacent about flu, but flu is still a killer of small children and old folks, so it's not to be dismissed as not serious. It is serious. I am happy to see you took him to the doctor.

Hi T., I am glad things are better. I just wanted to give you some info. I have heard of two instances in the past from friends where their family members were taken to the hospital for fever/flu like sysmptons and were sent home. When they got home, the illness took a turn for the worst. The doctors always don't know, so stay on top of it and don't let them discourage you by advising to wait it out, etc. Your child's life is much more important than a doctor saying the flu, etc has to run its course.

Check her lymphnodes. There may be a small infection somewhere that the fever is responding to. Give her some onions(cooked in something is fine) because they have a mild antibiotic and keep checking that the fever doesnt get too high. Otherwise let the fever do its job.

This happened to my daughter. even tough she did not have any of the usual symptoms, it turned out to be a bladder infection. I'd take her to the doctor.

If there is a fever, something is wrong. With an 8 year old, it could have been ear infection (even with no symptoms). Sometimes you have to cut back on other things (gifts, buying toys, etc) to take children to doctor. My daughter kept running a fever at night, daytime it was down. Turned out she had bronchitis (even though the peditrician had checked her 2 days before). With children, fever shows that something is wrong! Flu can be dangerous to children, especially if you give them asprin. Warm baths are a good idea. But definitely, something is wrong, and should be checked out. A good investment is a stethoscope (for listening to chest, back areas.
