Seeking Ideas for One Year Old's First Birthday with Dairy Allergy

Hi all!

I am looking for some alternative ideas to the traditional b-day cake due to my son's dairy allergy. He also isn't allowed to try wheat yet so any kind of baked good seems off the table. Does anyone have any interesting ideas to make his day more interesting than his usual rice cereal and oatmeal mixed with his fruits and veggies? I realize that this is more for me than it will be for him, but I still wanted it to be something different.

Thanks in advance!

L. H.

So What Happened?

Thank you all who submitted to me some ideas for my "dairy allergy" son's first birthday. We ended up giving him jello (peach and blueberry). I made it like the jigglers and cut them into small squares. He really enjoyed playing in it, which is really what most kids do with their first year birthday dessert and as it turns out, most of the adults wanted the jello over the cupcakes! Go figure! It turned out to be a great birthday.

what about a jello cake - jello mould of somesort. or just something that looks like a cake (maybe a flourless cake) with frosting on it. If I remember correctly, my son did not eat his cake at 1 years old - but he was very excited to get his hands into it and smuch it around.

Hi L.,
There is a great cake/cupcake mix that I found at Albertsons that is completely dairy free and GREAT tasting. It's in the health food section and it's a Vegan mix. It's made by Cherrybrook Kitchens http://www.cherrybrookkitchen.com/. I was so excited to see it in a regular grocery story plus it's amazing! They make frosting too.

okay... so this is not healthy but it is colorful and fun..
why don't you do a jello mold.. it will be bright in color and jiggly..

you could shape it in whatever theme you wanted. or you could do different colors like legos and build something with them.

good luck-
L.

Check out the baking isle at Whole Foods or Wild Oats (maybe even Henry's). There are several brands of wheat free/ gluten free baking mixes. You can substitute vanilla rice milk for the liquids. I have a nephew w/ food allergies so I am aware that it is h*** o* these special occasions. There is always non-dairy whipped topping for frosting. Nucola is a margarine that contains no dairy, if you want to make your own butter cream frosting w/ powdered sugar.
