Seeking Advice on Alternative Treatments of Allergies and Asthma

I was wondering if any of you Moms know of non-invasive treatments of allergies and/or asthma. My three children have various allergies and we have tried NAET (the Nambudripad's Allergy Elimination Technique) with some success but it's hard to say the allergies were eliminated. Some allergy symptoms have definitely reduced. I know that some therapists are using water-based or homeopathic desenstizing drops but I don't know anybody by name except one therapist in McHenry (but it's too big of a distance for us to drive). As for asthma, my almost 8 year old son has mild asthma but it's getting more intense now during the high pollen season. We do everything we can think of to keep him off steroids (regular MDs offered steroid treatments a few times) but sometimes it seems that we are running out of ideas. Any recommendations or suggestions from you will be greatly appreciated.

So What Happened?

Thanks to all of you wonderful wellness-conscious Moms for your advice and recommendations. There is some research work ahead of us but it already feels good to know that help is out there. We had already implemented a lot of changes in our house (i.e. non-toxic cleaning products, diet restrictions, supplements, regular chiropractic care and homeopathy) but there is always something new to be learned. Thanks again for a ton of useful information.

J.,

We have been seeing Dr. Harry Hong in Hoffman Estates for food allergies/intolerances and seasonal allergies. He does a mix of NAET - and BioSet and homeopathy. So far it seems to be helping.

I can't find his number - but his website is www.harryhong.com.

Hi J.-

There are a couple of things that you can try to help eliminate some of the issues that you are dealing with. First of all-your children's allergies usually have two main culprits-yeast and dairy-while these may and often do not show up on an allergy test they are the main aggravators. Yeast overgrowth is caused by antibiotics, vaccines, processed foods and sugars; just to name a few.

You need to get them on a really good probiotic and it needs to contain the 2 kinds of good flora-it will say that on the bottle. There are many products out there-American health, natures way and you can get them in chewable yummy wafers or a tasty liquid.

The next thing you have to reduced or eliminate (I would say eliminate completely) is the dairy. You can choose almond milk or rice milk as a substitute and these are very tasty as well. I suffered from allergies (hayfever) for years and until I found out that I HAD to cut out dairy, my allergies finally subside and have been allergy free ever since. Dairy is a mucus forming food and the body can not digest it. Cows milk is made for baby cows not for human consumption. Gluten is also another item that is very hard for Americans to digest but 90% of the time the dairy is the trigger for allergies and asthma.

I have some more information and websites. This is just a small portion of the information. I am really glad that you are trying to steer clear of the steroids.

You have to adjust the eating regimen and get the children's pH level up and more alkaline (Most people are much to acidic, even our children).

Your son's asthma-first what do you clean with?? Do you burn candles, do you have the artificial smelly stuff like a glade plug ins?? Do you use anything like febreeze or lysol? How about pledge? I could go on a bit longer, but if you want more info email me at ____@____.com really is a few changes.

I have a set of questions, not any answer. Can anyone update on how Dr. Heather Wisniewski's and Dr. Harry Hong's treatment went? Also Dr. Tom Locke's number is out of service. Is he a Chiropractor and how can I get his contact info. Lastly, does Dr. Boxer follow Dr. Rapp's methods or any other holistic approach?
Regards,
A.

J. - your story hits so close to home for me. I worked for four years to help my daughter reduce her allergy and asthma symptoms, and with much success. I did this too, alone, as I'm divorced and her father doesn't believe she has allergies, asthma, etc. In other words, what I did was only part-time (as she's with her dad often) - and the good news is it still worked.

** Also, I should note I'm in my 40s. When I was 5 yrs old, my parents were told I was a mess (alergic to everything, needing shots, having asthma, etc.) Basically, I'd need to live in a bubble. My mom was amazinging unconventional for that time and tried something - she had me go to a chiropractor for treatments. I went 2x a week for six months. Today, I have no astma (I run, play sports, bike, etc.) I rarely get sick and have no allergies around animals, food, etc. That certainly put me on a different path to help my daughter - here's more...

First, I contacted Dr. Boxer, an incredible pediatric allergist in Skokie. I have no idea if he is still around. There may be others in Illinois. I used Dr. Rapp's website - she's amazing too - to find such resources. Anyway, here's the method of treatment that has worked wonders for my daughter (now 8 yrs old)

- Naprapathic treatment. Unlike chiropractors, these folks loosen and adjust muscles, no cracking or snapping. I had my child visit a few times and they are able to open up her lungs, etc. It's amazing. I go to the Francis/Dudek group in Harwood Hgts, IL

- I also give my daugher a vibrator treatment on her back when I see the onset of a hard time. (You can get these fun vibrators at CVS, Walgreens.)It relaxes the back muscles and opens up the lungs. I'm told that when the allergies kick-in with the coughing, we constrict our back which constricts our lungs. By relaxing the back muscles, the lungs open up even more - allowing more air in, etc. This works!

- I've boosted her immune system with Colostrum and Vitamin C. I also give her childrens Allergy relief by NatraBio (whole foods, Mertz) and the homeopathic tablets from Boiron (the ones for stuffy nose, coughing, etc.) I also rub vicks on the bottom of her feet - really - and it reduces the coughing that accompanies allergies.

- Finally, I've learned that allergies can also be set off by stress. Well, that one I deal with in numerous ways!

I hope this is helpful.

Hi, my daughter has/had asthma, actually RAD reactive Airway Disease, and one way we controlled it was by monitoring her surroundings. We moved to a house with radiator heat (gas forced air & central heat are the worst for asthma, because of all the dust thats stirred up in the vents), all hardwood floors - no carpet (area rugs are fine, just clean them every other month), always open the windows when using solvents or cleaners, "free" detergent & fabric softener - although now I use vinegar for softening , it works better & is cheaper. No dryer sheets - they leave a film on clothes. Gentle neutral body soap - like Pears. Light fabric curtains that need to be washed every month, if you have blinds, nake sure you take them down & soak in bleach every few months. And of course keeping her away from cigarette smoke.

Before I made those changes, she was on a nebulizer 4X a day, plus taking steroids. Since the changes, she hasn;t needed even an inhaler for 2 years. She is now almost 8.

I know these are difficult changes, but they are worth it!

Good luck :)

Using a combination of bee pollen & echinacea with goldenseal resolved our allergies. The bee pollen should be local & we found it at Whole Foods. Use liquid echinacea as it is the most potent form.

I know a great doctor in Naperville. His name is Dr. Gelband. His office is at 603 E Diehl (near Diehl and Washington) and the phone number is ###-###-####. The website is www.drrichardgelband.com. I had allergies for the first time this spring and he gave me a natural remedy and I felt better in less than a half hour. It was amazing. It is completely non-invasive (no needles) and natural (no drugs, only supplements and such). Plus, he will treat you (or your children) to get rid of the allergic reaction.

BioAllers makes homeopathic allergy drops that you place under the tongue. They work like allergy shots--you get a bit of what it is you're allergic to and over time the symptoms ease. They are available at Whole Foods and health food stores. They have been very effective for me, less so for my son who isn't consistent in using them. Two cautions--the drops are specific for the various allergens, so you need to know what you are allergic to to get the right formula, and, like allergy shots, this treatment takes time to build up the immune system. It is not designed for symptomatic relief. Good luck!

I have allergies, and what worked for me last spring was to make sure I dusted and vacumed often, and to I didn't use my air conditioner all summer and that help, though on days that we had company, I did turn it on for them. Besides not turning it on you can replace all the air filters in the house and air conditioner. I also use a netty pot, which could be hard to teach a child to use. but when the direction are fallowed helps keep my sinuses feeling clear and clean. hope this helps

Hi J.,

Building up the immune system and eliminating chemicals from the home are strategies that seem to be the keys. Allergies and asthma are 2 big reasons why people investigate Shaklee products. Because the products are free of preservatives, artificial sweeteners, colors, flavors or any other artificial ingredients, they are especially valued by individuals with allergies. We have many success stories within our own personal group. I would be happy to provide information on which products seem to be the most beneficial for people if you contact me. It's an approach where you use the Shaklee household products and Air Source 3000 to eliminate toxins and Shaklee's nutritional supplements to bolster the immune system. The products are guaranteed 100%, so you can return them if you are not fully satisfied.
