Scalp Pain

I get a severe pain on my scalp from time to time. It's typically around my crown, sometimes to the right, sometimes to the left, and sometimes in all areas. It gets extremely tender and feels like it's bruised. Nothing makes the pain go away except to wash my hair. Has anyone else experienced this?

What can I do next?

Ouch! This may be an odd question, but do you wear your hair pulled back at all...in a rubber band or a clip of some kind. I have long hair and I usually wear pulled back in a pony tail or bun. Some days my scalp hurts and when I take my hair down, I realize it's because I had my hair pulled too tightly. My husband says I have my hair "on too tight!"

Good luck finding a solution.

My older daughter complained of that a while back. I thought it was odd and I checked her scalp. She had a couple of super-dry areas on her scalp where the skin was getting almost crusty. I could see how it would hurt! Anyhow, I bought her Head & Shoulders, which she uses every other time she washes her hair, and Aveda Dry Remedy, which she uses on alternating times. The combination of a super-hydrating shampoo/conditioner plus the shampoo that gets rid of the super dry skin seems to help her scalp. She says it doesn't hurt anymore. I don't know if this may be what's happening to you, but I thought I'd throw it out there. Another thought is maybe your scalp is irritated due to heat styling or chemicals from styling products? I have a friend who actually became allergic to an ingredient in her hair dye (what a bummer, huh?). Now she can only use henna-based dyes. Could be that you're just developing some kind of sensitivity?

Tension in your life can make the tiny muscles under your scalp tense up - when you shampoo your head, you are helping it twofold. You are massaging your head, and running warm water over it, both of which will make the muscles relax.
