Saving Money on TV

I am trying to save money on our satellite bill. After some research I ran across something called Roku. Does anyone use it? I have several questions that I can't seem to find answers for. Such as - we have 4 TV's. Do we need a separate box for each TV? Can we record favorite programs? Does it slow down the wireless access? Our favorite channels are Discovery, History, Travel, Food, Disney, Nick Jr. Can I find programs from those networks? Do I have to pay for them? I also understand you can do the same with a blu-ray player that is network ready. Is there an advantage of one over the other? The sticking point there is we have a DVD recorder that I don't want to lose and the other TV's have DVD players built in so I don't see the point in adding a DVD player to a DVD player TV. Hope this all makes sense. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

So What Happened?

Forgot to ask if all three TVs can watch TV at the same time without any slow down?

I am a HUGE ROKU box fan!!!! Yeah!!! I got mine for Christmas this last year. Its not what you think. Can you get TV shows, yes, but only a limited few. You still have to have Netfix. Also, yes, it only plays on one television. You can watch movies....but only old release movies. New release goes through netflix.
ROKU is NOT current TV...it is old stuff...thats why I like it. It seems to me that you are looking for current televised programming....ROKU is probably NOT for you.
If you have any other Q's, feel free to Pm me directly.....
Margaret :)
P.S. I missed one of your questions....If I am watching a movie on ROKU...the hub CAN use the PC....its just really S L O W !!!!!!

I read your "whats happenen" portion....YES, your internet WILL slow down...This is NOT a DVR!!! It is not a recording device...it is a box that allows you, through Netflix, to view, instantly to your TV, OLD series and OLD movies.....
I think what you are looking for is a DVR...that IS great...but it doesnt SAVE money...just makes stuff convienient.
Good Luck.

I know my grandpa used to have something called a grasshopper, I think, that would allow you to watch the same show on different tvs. I think he had it hooked to the living room and kitchen tv. I'm not sure about more than one. I'm not sure about wireless, though, as they dont have internet.

Hmm. I don't know a lot about satellite and cable and all that jazz.

Long story short about my inlaws:
They don't own a tv (saves money). They instead own a projector and a laptop computer. They watch their TV episodes from hulu.com and watch other tv shows and movies from Netflix (the watch instantly and dvds mailed to them). They have a 'screen' bigger than we do, and all they have to do is take their large pictureframe off their wall and plug in a computer.

(not sure if this is an option for you. Perhaps if History Channel and Disney etc are online for free, then maybe something to look into.)

We use Roku as well, and it is awesome. I would agree with the earlier post in that you cannot see every show you would on cable, but I would disagree in that there are not new movies or TV. There are some and more coming every day. Discovery Channel has a lot of shows, but I'm not sure about some of your other channels. You need to go to Netflix and search through the play now shows (those are what you will get with Roku).

There are also lots of kid's shows. We don't have any other TV besides Roku and the Internet and don't feel like we are missing anything. My son watches SuperWhy, Diego, and SpongeBob on Roku.

I you do not have to pay extra for discs (we use one in our playstation in the office), but I'm not sure about the box.

I'll tell you what else we do. We have a PC hooked up to our TV and watch other shows on Hulu.com. These are usually more up-to-date, but maybe a week late. It really isn't bad not having cable TV. You just have to adjust your thinking a little and not look at spoilers before the show is available on-line. I really don't miss the other shows and don't even know about half the junk that is out there anymore. The best part is that it prevents you from just randomly turning on the TV to whatever just to waste time. Instead you pick the show you want and then watch it (and without commercials or minimal ones). Good luck.

I don't know if this is a possibility for you but we get our Internet thru a cable company, pay $45 a month for Internet, but because they have to send the cable signal to our house we get free basic cable to any TV plugged into a cable outlet. We get all the channels you like for nada. We used to bundle with the same company till a cousin told us about this little flaw, now we save about a $100 bucks a month. We don't have a DVR or any cable boxes but I don't want to plan my life around the TV anyway. Also I know that the cable co usually dont tell you of this gliche.
