Root Canal Recovery

I posted on here previously about my dental woes. Long story short, I had a tooth ache, went to the dentist, she filled it. It was fine for a few days, and then the pain started again. I went back to the dentist, had a root canal. I was fine for a few days, then the pain started again. She put my on an antibiotic, thinking the tooth was probably infected. With the antibiotic, the pain went away. 10 days later the antibiotic was gone, the pain came back.
I went in for a consultation, she put me back on the antibiotic. And scheduled ANOTHER root canal for the following week. I had the second root canal. She said that the tooth was "wet" on the inside. I dont know what that means. And by the time all the instruments were out of my mouth, I forgot to ask her.
I was fine for a few days, still on the antibiotic. Thats 3 WEEKS of antibiotics.

Today I finished the antibiotics, and my tooth still isnt right. Its still sore. Not so much when I chew, or put pressure on it. Its just sore. It doesnt throb, it doesnt "ache" its just noticeably sore, all the time.

I havent had the crown done yet.

So, is this normal after a root canal? It was a week ago tomorrow that I had it done.
Also, I am pregnant. I didnt like getting all this dental work done while pregnant. And I didnt like being on the antibiotic for so long. BUT, if there is an infection or something wrong with my mouth, that could be dangerous for the pregnancy too.

Anyway, I guess what I am looking for is your experiences healing after a root canal.
THANKS!

So What Happened?

I just got back from the dentist. I have a DMO plan, which covers just about everything, at just about 100%, but I have to see an in-network dentist. My only other option, with my plan, is Aspen Dental. And I have yet to talk to somebody who has had a positive experience with them.

Turns out, its not the root canal tooth that is causing the problems. Its the tooth behind it. Its cracked. And needs a crown. HOPEFULLY, when the crown is done, the pain will be gone. Thanks for your input.

if the pain is still there that means she didn't do a greta job with clearing your root canal. i have had works on the same root canal over the course of two years. which sucks because that means i have had the crown replaced that many times because once the crown is put in, it will get destroyed if more work need to be done. go back to the same one as the 2nd one will make you pain as if doing this for the first time. go back and say go in and clear the whole thing. do not put the crown until your tooth feels fine
ps there should be NO pain after the root canal has been worked on properly. soreness yes, for a few days but that is it just soreness. good luck

get another root canal specialist to look at it. It sounds like the dentist you went to. . didn't do the first root canal the right way.. she should not charge you for the second time. you should feel better the day or two after a root canal if it is done right. I had problems after one.. and the pain was on and off for about 2 months.. i found out going to a root canal specialist that the dentist i had gone to had made a hole in my root.. make a long story short.. i lost the tooth after i spent a lot of money.. when having a root canal.. a specialist is the way to go.. good luck

If the tooth is still sore in a couple more days I would see a different dentist. I got a root canal and did not have any pain at all after it was done. My dentist did explain to me that it is very easy to miss one of the nerves and if I had any pain I would need to come back and have him do more work. That didnt happen and I never went on an antibiotic and I didnt feel any pain.

Keep in mind it may hurt for a few days. If it's been a few days, you need to go to an Endodontist (not an Oral Surgeon). An Endo is a root canal specialist. H/she will diagnose you and fix your problem. Try to bring any x-rays that you've had taken so you don't have to be further exposed. Also, the endo, because specialized, can offer better pain solutions for you (while pregnant).

If you are in your first trimester and are in a ton of pain, you can ask your OB/GYN if it's ok to take some Advil or Motrin or Tylenol with codeine. I got the OK to do so when I was 6 weeks pregnant and needed a root canal and had a killer abscess over Labor Day Weeknd a few years back.

I would suggest seeing an oral surgeon (if this isn't already the case) or another doctor if you are unhappy with the post-op care. Everyone recovers differently, but if you are uncomfortable and concerned about the meds and the pregnancy, get a second opinion!
