Here is my problem ... Last year I decided to take some time off to spend with my family. Now, for financial reasons, it's time for me to find a job again! The only problem is that I don't want to go back into the field that I had been in for the past 15 years, which is retail management and I am not sure what type of career my skills will transfer to. I was wondering if there are any moms out there that have had successful transitions out of retail and what they are doing now.

What can I do next?

Dear S.:

I, like you took off time from corporate america, only my leave lasted 14 years. I love that I made the decision but also wanted to get back to work. I have a 8yr and 14yr old at home and vacation time - flexibility and pay were not to be found. As I searched I started working in the health and environmental wellness field very part time. I have now become full time as everything I was looking for was sitting right in front of me.

I am actually coming into Overland Park on Friday Aug. 21st at 6:30pm. My business partner is an RN and we go around the region educating people on the importance of being chemical free. We are hosting a dinner at a Italian restaurant and would love for you to come and just listen about why we do this, what we do and how we earn an income. We keep our own schedules, vacation when we choose and advance based on our efforts not when someone tells us we can.

With you being in the retail world I have no doubt this may be of interest to you. No obligation, just information.

Even if you have found something over the last month, this is as part or full time as you would like and can add income to your household on many levels.

Please Call me at ###-###-#### as I will be on the road and I will add your reservation.
You are always welcome to bring someone along. I work with a close friend of 10 years and we teamed up our efforts and makes it even that much better.

I look forward to talking with you.

T. Anderson

I am currently a SAHM but prior I worked in retail management for 8 years. When the store closed I decided I was ready to try something other than retail but had a hard time figuring out what I could do. My husband came home from his chiropractor one day and said the Dr was looking for someone to run her office. I worked as a Chiropractic assistant for 2 years before my oldest was born and then chose to be a SAHM. I loved working there. I did everything from answering the phone, insurance billing, patient billing, ordering supplies, developing x-rays, basic bookeeping...everything for the office to run smoothly while the Dr took care of her patients. I like that she has an office where I was not located behind a glass window like in so many Dr offices. I was able to greet and talk with the patients as they came in and waited. My retail skills transferred very well into a Doctor's office environment. The only thing that I really had to learn was the details about insurance companies and insurance billing and it wasn't that hard to learn.
I loved working there and would like to go back to it when my children get older.

East Missouri Action Agency here has a whole department that is in a separate building from their other resources that helps people with finding jobs and career placement and training. If you have one where you are, I would try them as a resource.

I have been a stay-at-home mom most of my life. Over the last decade, I've been working to figure out what is my passion and can I make money doing it. My kids are teenagers/young adults, so now I need to figure out a life just for me (and my boyfriend) as I move forward as it will more than likely change over the next few years. Have you tried to look into a Career Center or temp. agency that might be able to better guide you through the process? Message me if you feel you need to discuss this topic further.
