I have been a stay at home mother for about 6&1/2 years now. I love it. Next year my youngest will be attending kindergarten full day and I would like to start paving a road back out into the workforce. I am very nervous. I would like to become certified or get an Associates degree first so that I may have some skills to offer. I have some college classes done but not a degree. I would like to go to school for about a year, maybe a year and 1/2 but then I would really like to go back to work. I worked as a pharmacy technician prior to becoming a stay at home mom. I know several mothers have been in my position and I would appreciate any advice. Thank you.

What can I do next?

Staying at home and working a home-based business is one of ther ways that you can earn money, be available for spouse and children, participate in school events, travel, etc. Check out www.lia.sophia.com/christmas4you and tell me what you think.

Hello, I have helped many moms transition back to work and make some extra money while in school. I am looking for avon business partners to show the brochure and start your own business at home. You can earn money while you are going to school and still work from home. Check out my mom perk.
My daughter found a company that would allow her to work less hours so she could be at home when the children came home from school. This also eliminated the cost of afterschool daycare. Many companies are very flexible now.
Good luck!

My son is 9 and my daughter is 5. She just started Kindergarten this past September. I am finally working toward a career (in Web Design) through an accredited online institution. It is very fulfilling & I am learning A LOT! I feel proud of myself for consistently getting A's and keep at it knowing that my future and the future of my children rests in my doing well & increasing my skill set and therefore marketability. I highly recommend an online education. What is really going to be helpful is having the support of your spouse and/or immediate family. They will need to understand that you require designated private, study time. This may encourage your spouse/siblings/parents to spend quality time with your children as well. As far as I can tell it is a win-win scenario!
Best Wishes!

Thinking medically: If you aren't up for (financially or time wise) the classes to become to an RN the track to an LPN is shorter. What an LPN can actually get to do in a hospital or nursing home varies greatly with who (patient needs and nurses supervising) you work with. It really depends on what you enjoy doing and want to do and be better at. You could do something completely different from the medical field. If you are a people person and like scrap booking you could do a business like that. You could do an e-bay business. There are so many choices. You could do some kind of childcare assisting or elementary education if you want to keep working with young kids.

Best Idea: Get some carrier counseling at a local college. There are "tests" you can take that help evaluate your interest and see what carriers best fit you. Then you can evaluate the results and decide if 2 or 3 years of school to get what you REALLY want is for you or if you only need 6 months. Be sure to take along a transcript, even unofficial to see how much of the education you can/can't shave off.

Hi C.
Before being a stay at home mom of three teens, I had worked for close to 20 years. When I moved to the US, I became a stay at home mother. Truthfully, I found it dificult because my kids didn't need me in a way small children do.
So I went to George Mason University where they have a program for returning adult students. It is called Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS). I truly enjoyed it because I was able to create my studies based on my personal life experience, and be with adult students who could understand the difficulties of returning. The faculty is really helpful also in helping you direct you to where you would like to go. This is not a cookie cutter type of program and does require work and planification. But personally, I would not have done it any differently.
I am now a Life Coach and my education gave my all the tools and knowledge I needed to move foward. I has also helped my in my other trainings that I am doing.
I hope that this will answer some of your questions or at least give you some inspiration on what to do.
Good Luck

Hi C., my name is J. and I was wondering have you thought about staying home and taking on a business that you can do right from home. Many mothers today do it and love it because they work from home, supplement income, and not to mention feel as if they have a purpose to do a job. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and I had to go back to work and I felt depressed and worried all the time then I joined a group called THE MOM TEAM. It stands for mothers on a mission. Now I can work from home but know that my job is important and has a cause. So, if you would like you can e-mail me at www.urfuturematters.com and I will be more than happy to talk to you. Hope this information maybe gave you a new way to look at a different idea then heading back out to the old 9 - 5 job.
