My grandmother gave me an old, wooden storage trunk. It smells like moth balls. Does anyone have any suggestions for removing the smell?
crumple up newspapers and close up in trunk for a few days. You may need to do it several times. vinagar and water solution may help if you wash it out with that then let dry really well before doing the newpaper thing.
Napthalene is a tough one to remove, but you can try (multiple) open boxes of baking soda closed up in the trunk. Baking soda is a great odor absorber, but napthalene really permeates wood. If you can get the odor down low enough with the baking soda, perhaps just leaving the trunk open for a while will get rid of the rest.
We are not really getting that much sun now a days but in India, where I was born, a good couple of hours for few days in the strong sun is an age old remedy to get rid of all smells and bugs.
