A.,

If there is an overwhelming number of rats within the neighborhood you can call the city or county abatement office and they can help with eradication.

Several years back there was a sub-division being built not to far from our home and once the area was cleared for surveyors the rats kept coming. I called the city and they came out and handled the problem.

I hear putting Coke in a saucer and the rats will drink it, but the acid will cause their stomachs to burst.

I would try other options before poison. My friend poised a rat or mouse and then her cat ate it. The cat died. We had a rat living in our garage for a while and we tried a trap (the death chamber) which didn't work. We bought these things you plug in on each end of the are and they seemed to work. When I told my co-worker this he said it's because rats do not like noise. Rather or not this is true, I do not know (I never looked into it) but he said if you want to keep rats our of an area to turn on a radio to a fuzzy station and turn it down really low. They will stay away from the noise. Now I wouldn't leave the car on or the car radio on, but if you have a cheap boom box or even an old walk man, you could probably get something like that to work. It's worth a try and let me know if it works.

POISON! Harsh, but so far as I have found the best way. We live behind a field and were getting mice and rats and did EVERYTHING, finally my husband put out a little poison. She can try the traps and the glue traps, but they are really messy and don't always get them or the leave body parts on the traps and get away (so gross) these critters are my phobia!! Getting chills even writing this.... GOOD LUCK... SHe can try calling a pest control and seeing if they have any advice.

Traps seem disgusting, but they are humane and you can see the dead animal right away, unlike poison where they die in a corner somewhere and stink the place up.

I like the cat idea... if your friend likes and can have cats, nature's best rodent control! :-)

P.S. Rat activity will increase with the cold weather. They go into garages and storage areas to get warmth... they aren't stupid! I was told by a pest control guy that they don't like change either. So if your friend rearranges the garage a little, it might deter them for a bit. Also if she can find the source they are coming in from and close it up, that would help. Rats chew EVERYTHING, so she needs to make sure that she uses some kind of metal to close up any areas she suspects they are coming through.
