Hello. I am trying to get any information I can about Westhaven Elementary or any other school you can reccomend that doesn't have a high tuition. I am weary of the school system here, but that comes from peopl who say to avoid Portsmouth schools in general, and i'd like to hope they are misinformed. I looked into Portsmouth Catholic Elem. but we just can't afford the tuition. My daughter will be 4 in June and will start pre-k next school year. She has never been to any other school, though asks a lot these days to go, so I am hoping it's a good experience for her as a first timer. Thanks!

What can I do next?

My son will be 4 this fall and after a lot of looking we decided on Court Street Academy in Olde Towne Portsmouth. They are a baptist school, so religion is worked into the day. They also have a small class size and the teachers seems great, they will also give you a tour of the school whenever you want.

My kids went to Sweethaven Christian School from K-2 to 4th grade and then switched over to Churchland Elementary. They got a great headstart at Sweethaven. By the time they finished kendergarden they could both read and write in cursive. They have been honor roll students in both Sweethaven and Churchland. I can only speak for the Churchland Public schools in Portsmouth, but I have only seen good results. Churchland Elementary and Churchland Middle are both fully accredited. Portsmouth gets a bad rep sometimes. The schools have really improved.

Check out Christopher Academy on Cedar Lane in Portsmouth. The tuition is reasonable for a private school. They go from Pre k3 - 5th grade. Both my children attend and LOVE it. We have not had one day when my kids haven't wanted to go to school. They actually get upset if they have to miss school. I believe they still have openings for fall.

Hi S.! A good website to try is GreatSchools.net. You can compare all different kinds of schools in your area to find one that suits your needs. Good luck!

Good morning S.,
I live in Chesapeake and when we moved here from NC my daughter had just turned five. Because her birthday is in November she couldn't start kindergarten. I called the local elementary school and asked about a preschool program. I was told about Early Adventures and the program is FREE and it ran from 7:50 to 2:19 like the regular school day. I don't know what elementary schools in Portsmouth have the program but it is conjunction with the YMCA and my daughter really enjoyed it.
Hopefully it is offered in your area as well.
