Pumpkin, Non Scary Halloween Book Recommendations????

My son is having a "Pumpkin Party" at preschool. It is a Christian school and they prefer nothing scary or inappropriate for a Halloween type party. They specifically requested we refrain from doing anything with ghosts or witches because they may be too scary for the children, that and witches wouldn't exactly be appropriate for a Christian school. I have been asked to read the children a story at the party. Can anyone recommend a good book on this season/theme for this age group? I have seen a few that could work, but nothing that just grabs me as THIS is the one.

Thank you!

So What Happened?

Thank you all for your suggestions! I attempted to check out the books at the library only to find that any of the suggested titles were already borrowed. Then I attempted to purchase them at local book stores. I was able to get a copy of The Scarecrow and The Spider. It was a great book and the kids and parents loved it. I intend to get copies of the other books mentioned as well. There were some very good suggestions. Thank you!

A book that my son LOVES is Spot's Halloween. It's pretty short and to the point, but it's one of his favorite books. He takes it everywhere he goes. If you choose this book, you may want to have another book to read, also, since it's so short. Just a suggestion! =)

Pumpkin Gospel is a perfect book for your son's party. It is a Christian book that is not too long, which makes it perfect for preschool aged children. My son goes to a Christian preschool as well and they read this book yesterday and it is absolutely wonderful. And I saw it at Barnes and Noble just a few days ago. Good luck and happy reading. :)

I really recommend "The Pumpkin Patch Parable" by Liz Curtis Higgs. It is a Christian book perfect for this age group. It explains how a pumpkin was carved and just like Jesus did for us - you scoop out the icky parts inside and the warm glow shines from the inside out.

Courdoroy's Halloween (the little brown bear series) is a great one! In the book he gives up his costume to a friend whose costume falls apart and at the last minute uses the table cloth as his costume. Not scary at all and with a message that friends are more important than Halloween.

My daughter just turned three and it seems that this year everything is scary! She has the cutest book, it's not very long, and I would think only appropriate for children her age and little younger, called 5 Little Pumpkins. I think we bought it at WalMart, but it may have been Barnes and Noble.

Good luck!

I'm not sure how useful it would be, but what about 'It's the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown?' I don't remember how exactly the story line goes, but I always remember that being a Halloween classic when I was little. It may be worth checking out to see how appropriate it would be for the age level as well as the school. I don't know if they would have anything related to the material, but you may also want to lookinto the VeggieTale books. My kids love those. They are Christian based, but like I said, I'm not sure if they would have anything relating to Halloween material. Or maybe "This is the Pumpkin" by Abby Levine. I haven't personally read them all, but I found those through a search at waldenbooks.com. If I find anything else, I'll be sure to let you know!

Clifford the Big Red Dog series, by Norman Bridwell, has a Halloween story, "Clifford's Halloween". My boys are 2 and 4, and they love Clifford.

There is a book my two boys absolutely LOVE. It's called "The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything." It's about an old lady that goes into the woods to pick berries. She comes across shoes that stomp, gloves that clap, all the other clothes and while walking on the path home she goes faster and faster, picking up all different parts for a scarecrow including a pumpkin for the head. After she gets home she gets a knock on the door and she walks to the door saying she's not afraid. She opens the door and the pumpkin head tries to scare her. She said she's not scared and the pumpkin is sad because he doesn't know what he's going to do for a job. She then turns him into a scarecrow for his garden. My boys love it cause I let them shake, clap, wiggle, whatever the clothing item does, they do. They also try to "read" along with it too.

Good luck.

The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Affraid of Anything by Linda Williams. This is a great book. Not too spooky, just a little. It has an audience participation element. Great for a read aloud. No Withces, Ghosts, etc.
