We never told anyone I was prego until after the first trimester. With my 1st, we went camping when I was 7 weeks, and it was hard to hide the fact I had morning sickness plus I wasn't drinking. When asked, my husband told everyone we were trying to conceive, so we thought it would be best to keep my system clean - no alcohol. Everyone bought it!! My sister in law tried to hide her pregnancy at New Year Eve and did the water in the beer can trick, and we all caught on real fast. Good luck.

I would just say you are at the tail end of being sick and still on medication. Walk around with a diet coke or juice, people may just assume you are drinking alchoholic drinks.

in my experience, as soon as I turned down drinks, everyone close to me suspected I was pregnant. it was very hard to keep it quite the 2nd time especially because I gained weight almost immediately... If someone guesses, just ask them to keep quite for another month or so until you feel comfortable breaking the news publicly. You can always just say you're on antibiotics or something and that you can't drink...

Yup, parties or even getting together with friends outed me everytime, I love love love to drink wine! I'd go with I'm driving or antibiotics idea though.

Congrats. You can always say that you are on medicine and you can't drink while you are taking it.
Good luck!

I often drink club soda with a twist of lime or lemon. It looks like a vodka/gin and tonic, but without the alcohol. It was my standard drink while pregnant. If you don't like plain tonic water, you can have it with any fruit juice.

You can always say that you are trying to conceive and don't want to take any chances!

First off, congratulations!

Wow, lots of great "excuses"! How about something like, "I've been getting a lot of headaches lately and the doctor wants me to stay away from alcohol for awhile and see if that helps".

I also agree that having a soda or clear soda in hand will help quell any questions or speculation. Then if you get caught with your non-alcoholic drink, you can use the above excuse. Oh, and maybe give the bartender a nice tip to keep your drinks coming sans alcohol w/o having to ask. :)

Good luck and have fun!

I would walk around with some sort of drink (i knew it was water or sprite or diet coke) but others assumed it was a mixed drink. Make sure there's a garnish like lime or something that also seems to be important. I think just as long as you have something in your hand people just assume. I always drink gin and tonic. If you have water you can say that's what you are drinking. Good luck.

I lied and said I was still hungover from the night before! The trying to conceive is a good one too!

I'm not a big drinker either but would have a few drinks at parties. When I was in this situation I just told people I was on an antibotic if questioned and ordered Cranberry on the rocks.. so it "looked" like I was drinking a Cranberry and Vodka.

antibiotics or some type of medication.....or you can just not go because something came up. the last time i was in this situation i went out to the bar with some friends, had been planning it for months and i just drank orange juice and "vodka" but without the vodka of course. the good thing is that now a days you can't smoke in bars in illinois so it's safe to go when you are pregnant and not showing yet.

I was in the same situation when I went on a camping trip with a bunch of huge partiers (ok I used to be one too before I had my son) anyway...I got a can of beer, took it to the bathroom, dumped it out, refilled it with water and drank and drank. All that water will make you pee...which is perfect if you want them to think you're drinking. If you really want to be convincing, buy O'Doull's beer without alcohol. Pour it into a glass and voila, you're partying. If anyone buys you a drink just pretend to sip it, then discreetly set it down or throw it away when no one is looking. Or, take it to the bathroom with you and dump it down the toilet. They'll think you chugged it. The only trouble was later when a couple people did the math and thought I drank while pregnant and got kind of judgemental about it. ha!

Congratulations! Either you can say you are on meds (i.e. sinus concerns - can't drink on Sudafed/antihistamines) or stick to a tall, clear soft drink or cola drink with a lime and garnish. You are right - I've been guilty of taking notice of a close family member's sudden "non-drinking" at a family event! If you want to keep it a secret - it's good you are plotting now! Best of luck. And ..jokingly saying to that person who asks...."Thanks for telling me I look like I've gained a few pounds-I was feeling great in this outfit!" can keep someone from asking again!
