okay everyone here is my situation. I have been potty training my three year old son for three days. The training is going pretty well,half the time he pees in the potty,the other half he pees in his underwear. The first day he even did poops on the potty(probably luck and good timing)since has had two poop accidents in his underwear,understandable, my problem is that he will come to me and say "I have to pee" so we run to the potty and he has gone a little in his underwear but gets most of it in the potty,then five minutes after he goes he has an accident. I do make him sit for a bit to make sure it's all out but it never fails that he has an accident right after he has gone. How do I teach that "feeling" of going? Am i missing something or is there something i should be doing more of. Please help.

I had trouble with one of my sons and potty training. A girlfriend suggested trying boy boxers instead of the usual briefs for underwear. Worked like a charm. Maybe it's the looser feeling of the boxers that isn't reminiscent of a diaper, but he has had minimal issues/accidents now that he wears boxers. And they look very cute! Just an idea~

Try not to worry, he sounds like he's doing great ! And what you have described is not abnormal or unusual. Potty training takes time, and it's only been three days ! Just keep doing what you're doing, and talk to your son about what he might be feeling in his body. It just takes time for little kids to really focus on and understand what's going on in their bodies' and how to understand their bodies' cues. It makes sense, given that up to this time, they have just been able to let go in their diapers - sometimes without much awareness on their part... Good luck ! L.
hey! gl! lol! my 2 1/2 year old boy could careless about going potty....i'm sick of poopy diapers!
I would suggest that you let him run around with a bare bottom for a few days. My son had a very hard time understanding what the sensation of having to go potty was until I did this. Then, he trained very quickly and with very few accidents. It sounds like your son is doing great. Good luck!
I would make him stay for a bit and have a book available. My son get's a big kick out of it. He might not be fully ready -- boys seem to take longer than girls, especially if he is your middle. Just have patience and remember that accidents will happen, it's only been a few days. Good Job!

Other than that - for my boy, he wore diapers all day at daycare and at home we really pumped up the underwear deal, and he wanted to be like daddy too so we just kept practicing...no huge accidents really to speak of. After a week or so of that "fun" he wore them to school - think it helped that at school there were other kids that "had to go" so he wanted to be like them :)
He still wears a pullup to bed cause of accidents but he chooses when he wants to wear underwear to bed and "try again" to get up and go potty at night. We just let it happen naturally tho - accidents treated like no big deal.

I'm in the midst of training my 3-year-old son as well and not sure if they 'get' when they have to pee at first. I think you just need to take them to the potty ALL THE TIME so that their bladders are empty and accidents are less of a mess. I take him every hour and before or after we do anything (lunch, going outside, etc.) Keep up with the underwear, as I hear diapers and pull ups just interfere with the training. We get accidents, too, but I think they eventually piece it together. Pooping is another story! We seem to get those in the potty by chance but I have cleaned up A LOT of pooped undies lately. Any tips on that would be great!

My 3 year boy did the same thing when he was learing. At one point I stopped for a few weeks then started again. I got the book called "Once Upon A Potty" by Alona Frankel and my son loved it! We would read it when he was on the potty. Make sure you get the boy version if you are interested. Good luck!
If there's a lot of luck involved, which it sounds like there is, maybe he's just not ready. Lots of kids don't get "that feeling" for a long time - the bladder-brain connection just isn't developed. If he pees 5 minutes after going to the potty, then he's not emptying his bladder enough - just enough is coming out to relieve the pressure but he's not forcing the rest out. Maybe he doesn't know how! It's not his fault. Boys often take longer than girls so be sure you are training him on his schedule, not yours. I was so anxious to be done with diapers, but my son just wasn't ready. You can try pull ups during the day - they're easy to pull down if he has to go or wants to try, but he won't be wearing pee-filled underwear. You can try the other posted suggestions of boxers and bare bottoms, but make sure he isn't pressuring himself for something he is developmentally unable to do. I promise you, he will not go to kindergarten in a diaper! Hang in there!
