Potty Training at Nightime??

Just getting advice on when and how to get my son out of pull-up's at nightime. He's been potty trained for a year (he's 3 1/2) but still wakes up a little bit wet most days...I try not to give alot of fluids after 7'ish and he goes potty before bedtime, usually, but he is just a little wet when he wakes up. Also, i'm trying to tell him it's ok to get up and go potty if he needs to....but he's such a sound sleeper, i don't think that will work either. Is he still too young? Should i wait until he's dry most days? He has good control during the day and even at naptime, no accidents at all! Any advice would be appreciated...Thanks! H.

I put a little potty in my daughter's room with a night light. I still didn't take the pull ups off at night until she was 4. At that point she hadn't had an accident in a few months and the pediatrician convinced me she was ready. I would just keep the pullups on him at night right now until he goes a week or 2 without any wetness.

If he is still in a crib, I would leave him in the pull-ups or underjams. If he is in a toddler bed, I would put a small potty in his room, and a bell. Then give it a try. If he does wake up in the night, the potty is right there, and the bell will let you know that he is up and may need you.

Hey,

My son was hard to potty train too. The only thing I can suggest is maybe not letting him have any drinks maybe after 5:30...I know its sounds rough but i did that with my kids too, all though I dont rem the exact time...but you get the idea...just push ur time back some and see how that works...good luck

We potty trained my daughter over a weekend. We gave her 2 weeks in pull ups at night and after that we began putting her in underwear. She had 2 accidents her first week and it's been great every since. She rarely gets up at night to go. She just goes first thing in the morning. Before we began I read "Potty Train Your Child in Just One Day" by Teri Crane. It really worked for us. We didn't do the party but employed all the techniques. I talked to a friend that never used pull ups for her son. She said she went straight to training pants with plastic day and night.

H.,

There are many kids older than your son who still have to wear pull ups. Most kids will naturally outgrow the need for one at night as they get older. You can see all the adds on TV for various night time underpants for older kids. Sometimes their little bodies and bladders cannot control themselves at night. Just make sure he doesn't feel bad for the things he cannot control at night. As he gets older and it is concerning to you, you can talk to his doctor to rule out any medical issues. My 4 yr old recently had stopped wetting at night and getting up in the middle of the night if she has to go. But she still likes to have the pull up...I am trying to get her not to have a fit when she is not wearing a pull up at night. We are on our last box...then thats if. Good Luck!! The time will come when he is ready!!

Hi H.,

I am the mom to two girls and a boy and I am convinced that it just takes longer for boys to stay dry at nighttime. My son just turned 7 and every once in a while, he still wets the bed. He stopped wearing pull ups when he was 6 after staying dry for long periods of time (a month or so). My neighbor ended up buying an alarm for her son when he was 7. BTW, both boys are VERY sound sleepers!!

I wouldn't worry about the nighttime potty issue. I believe that when his bladder is ready, then he will begin to stay dry. (my girls, once potty trained by day, were dry all night every night. I don't understand it, I just know what happened in my family).

Good luck.

H. I'm getting ready to work on this issue too with my 4 yr old son who has also been potty treained for a year. He sleeps like a rock. I read a couple days ago on here that a couple would have their son go right before his bedtime and then at THEIR bedtime they would get him up to go again. They did keep him in pullups until they were sure he had the hang of it. They also said that he got the signal and began getting up sometimes by himself to go. They even did this when they had to carry him asleep to the potty to have him go. I'm gonna try that cos I have NO IDEA how my little guy is gonna ever start to wake when he feels the urge to go in the middle of the night. Hope that helps - S.

First off the pay to potty train at night isn't to limit fluid intake it's to up it. You need to give your son a chance to feel it. If he only has to go a little he won't feel it. Next put a water proof sheet on (I got mine at sears, walmart's are junk) and take off the pull ups. He has to have a good reason and if he's covered there isn't any good reason.
