Potty Training - Whitinsville,MA

My youngest is 15 months, recently she is obsessed with the bathroom. Any time someone is in there she follows them in and waits for them to be done. She sits on the stool and babbles at you. She also starts getting naked when she needs a change. Is she too young to start potty training? My older girls were about two when we started. When did you start training? It seems a bit early to me but she seems like she wants to. Any thoughts?

It sounded like I wrote this post. My daughter 15 months is doing the same exact thing so i bought her a potty. even if she's playing if she goes and points or shows interest in the potty i take her diaper off and sit her on it with a book or stuffed animal.. she's only gone on it once but its a start. she had gone in the bathroom pointed to the potty and rubbed her belly so i took her diaper off and there she went. I dont push it I follow her lead and seems to be working out pretty well. Good luck.

My daughter was like this 1t 18 months becuase her big brothers used the potty she wanted to as well...she did not push it but encouraged her...for 2-3 weeks she was almost 100% potty trained butthen her schedule chnaged a little bit and she lost interest when the novelty wore off...so then she would go but only when she wanted to...we started up again at about 30 months and now she is 36 months old and pretty much potty trained. Just expect some back sliding and that it may take a little bit longer but go for it! I have known people who ignored this phase and had difficulty potty training becuase thier child lost interest and became too dependant on diapers..so they were still training at 4 and 5 years old.

It may be a good idea to do what others have suggested and have a potty for her around but don't pressure her to use it yet. I have heard that potty training won't work or will be harmful before a child understands cause and effect. I've read that understanding typically comes around 20 months but of course all children are different. Good luck!

With older siblings in the house your little one is probably interested in trying to keep up with all the things the older kids do. Why not letter her try if she shows interest. I only have one child and he seemed to show interest at about that same age. Unfortunately I listened to all the people telling me he was too young and at that age they are training you not the other way around. So I waited, and waited, and waited - he turned 4 and was still wearing pull ups because he didn't have any interest and would scream if you asked him to try. He did finally get out of them a few months later.

Hi M.,
I also have a 15 month daughter. I bought her a potty when she turned one. I have been having her sit on it every night before bath time and it's become part of her nighttime routine. Now whenever I say it's night night time, she says potty, potty and will go to the bathroom door. She is now where near close to being potty trained but at least she won't be afraid of the potty when she is ready. I say go ahead and let her start sitting on one, especially since she seems interested in it. It won't hurt anything and I have seen kids potty trained by 1 1/2...it's definately not common but it can happen. Good luck!

If she wants to and seems ready, go for it.
Be ready to give it up for a time if reality doesnt sit well with her.
I had one ( of the seven) that completely toilet trained herself by the time she was seventeen months old. My Mum told me I did the same thing.
Its never too early if they are ready.
Could be a false alarm, could be she does not like being nasty.
Best wishes and God bless

I was told by my daughter's nurse that a child is not physically ready to be potty trained until they are 18 months old. My 17 1/2 month old girl has been into the potty and following me in the bathroom then running over to watch the toilet paper etc go down the toilet. We are going to start somewhere between 18 and 20 months. We have read up on a book called "Toilet Training in Less Then One Day" and are going to try it. So 18 months to officially start training her, but encourage her to sit on the potty etc now if she wants to. Our little girl loves sitting on her potty with her clothes on and sometimes without clothes. She likes to copy Mommy.
Good luck!

get her a little potty for herself and let her sit on it when you are sitting on your potty. That is how I first trained my son. he will be two in May and is pretty much potty trained. Don't push the issue too much, just let her sit on it. In a few months, start asking her if she wants to go potty, and start putting her on there with no diaper. and don't forget to sing the peepee on the potty song and praise her for sitting on it. Soon she will start actually peeing in the potty. There are a lot of 18 month olds that are potty trained, so it isn't too early to start.

I would say it wouldn't hurt to try? Just don't force the issue much because she is soo young. My son is 20 months, and still has ZERO interest in training. We got him an Elmo potty and he refuses to even try and sit on it. Honestly, the kid would sit in a wet diaper all day if id let him! :-) Good luck!
