My son is 2 1/2 and has been potty trained (sort of) for at least 6 months now. My problem is, he is only potty trained outside of the house. What I mean by that is he has no accidents while we run errands all day long or even when we left for a weeks vacation and had not a single accident all day long for the whole 7 days! However, inside our house, he will not go consistently. We have lots of accidents all day long! I don't get it! Nothing works...why is it when we are out of our house everything is great???? How can I make my bathroom as exciting as those in public places??? Anyone experience this before?

What can I do next?

I found this out by accident. My son always made a mess. I mean he had no control what so ever!!! Husband siad he needed something to aim at. So I got some enamel paint and drained the water in the toilet and painted a little bullseye in the toilet where I wanted him to aim. It worked like a charm. He rarely misses the target area now. The side benefit is when I ask him to "go hit a bullseye" for me, he takes off for the potty and never balks at having to go, where before I would tell him to go or worse, ask him if he had to and he would tell me no or fight me to go because he didn't want to stop what he was doing. Now it is much more like a game. Hope it helps. If you don't want to have something permanent on your toilet, you can try putting a sticker just above the water line and it works too, only sticker will come off and it gets pretty nasty. BTW, my son is truning 3 this weekend, so they are similar in ages.

Have you tried using a timer? Maybe one with a cute sound? Every time the timer goes off he has to try to go. It will become so automatic that he will begin to go on without you when you don't make it time, ha.

When he is elsewhere, does he go in a toilet or urinal? If he uses a urinal, they do have some that are for kids for potty training purposes. If he uses a toilet, you might try just telling him to go periodically so it's something he thinks about. Sometimes, home is more fun with all of the toys and things to do and it's too much hassle to stop to use the toilet.

We went through this as well - he got so caught up in his usual routine at home that he "forgot" to go. We started setting timers for every 45 mins - he went to the potty whether he felt the need or not. After a few days of this, we started to bump the time up to 1 hr, then 1.5 hrs, etc. After a few weeks, it became his "new" routine to go use the potty at home. It wasn't a lot of fun, but it DID work.
