Potty Training - Auburn,MA

My son is 2yrs 10mos and has been potty trained for about 10 months (still wears a diaper at night time) but he is going to pre school two days a week in the fall and although he is trained he goes sitting down. I'm looking for any ideas to get him to stand while he is going. I've tried cheerios in the potty and even tried to offer him a treat if he goes standing up, all with no luck.

What can I do next?

Let him sit, standing is a mess. Most little guys aren't tall enough or coordinated enough to make standing work out. Once he can, buy stock in mops and wipes!

Why? sitting down is a good thing, no mess...lol and most pre-schools don't even see your child "using" the potty. just as long as he is able to use it is enough. let me tell you i wish my boys now 4 and 6 still sat down, it's a mess behind my toilet but there is something that you might try when he does start going standing up... its called flippee, you can look it up at flippee.com, one more thing try pull ups at night... that way he can go if he wants to.

That's actually pretty normal. I work in a daycare, and I find that most boys just switch to standing when they are good and ready. My own son was about 3 when all of a sudden he was dry through the night and within a week he started going standing up as well. I think the biggest influence was watching his dad, because when he did it for the first time he came running out of the bathroom all excited because he "Went potty just like Daddy!" I really wouldn't worry about it, he'll probably figure it out when he's comfortable.

My son sat down to pee for a long time - he's just starting to stand now at 3 years 9 months. It wasn't a problem at pre-school last year. I wouldn't worry too much, he'll stand to go when he's ready. Good luck!

I have to agree with the other posts...that's awesome that he is already potty trained so young because I've heard it takes awhile for boys to potty train...and I agree with the sitting on the toilet should be perfectly fine. Chck out this site below for other ideas if you need, but sounds like your son is ready for preschool! good luck!

I wouldn't worry about him not standing up but he'll model what he sees/is taught. My husband taught our son to go standing up. Your son may transition more quickly by learning from his dad.

That's great that your son is potty trained so early. My son, who is now 5 1/2, has only been standing peeing since he was about 4. Before that he was sitting down. I don't think the preschool will care which way he does it. I worked in a preschool last year and there were a few kids there that were not potty trained at all. The teachers were very patient and kind to all the kids when it came to potty issues. That was a classroom of kids aged 3.5-5.5.

Oh, and be prepared to clean up quite a bit of pee once he is able to stand up. Not sure when their aim gets good......and I've learned the hard way to use a nightlight in the bathroom!

Most preschool boys sit to use the potty. He won't be out of place and the other kids won't likely see him potty anyway. I wouldn't worry about it.

Cheerios in the potty ? That sounds very appetizing.

Let him watch his dad go outside in the back yard. He will soon emulate that LOL.

No need to hurry it. If he is sitting down on the potty that is great and that is enough. He will get it the hang of it when he is 3. No pun intended LOL

I'm going to have to agree with Rebecca- why? I would say that unless he is above average height he'd have to stand on a stool and that just doesn't seem all that safe since he'd have to balance there with nothing to hang on to. I say let him sit- I'm sure he will not be the only one at pre-school sitting.
