Potty Nerves

I know there are often potty-posts, but my question is really specific. My son is 23 months - I know he's young to use the potty, but he talks about it a lot and seems to totally "get it," he loves potty books, loves to flush, loves to dump the poop from his diapers into his potty and then into the big potty, loves to watch us go, sits on his potty in his clothes when asked.... About three weeks ago, he did use the potty and it was totally at his own initiative, but now won't use it again. He seems to get panicy and nervous about taking his diaper off to go. I am not interested in pressuring him or really diving in to potty training right now because he's young and I don't think he would respond well to the pressure (in fact I think it could back-fire), but I wondered if anyone had some ideas or suggestions to keep encouraging him at his own little pace!

What can I do next?

Try Cheerios....we all know you can't dunk them but the boys don't. You take about six cheerios & put them in the potty/toilet & let him try to dunk them by aiming, pointing & shooting! I know it sounds strange but it works & I've shared this with several mother's on here & they just loved it! The boys think it's a game but in actuallity their being potty trained & don't even know it:-)! Good luck & God Bless!

My girls always liked company. Either I or one of the older siblings would set on the big pot and the toddler on the potty seat. Reading, talking, singing, till the job was done. Potty time became a silly party. They sang a silly song from the Rugrats I think, "I like to sing, I like to dance, but I can't do it with Poopy in my pants!" It gets pretty silly, but they trained so easily. Adding fiber to the diet, increased water intake, and maybe dried prunes might help get things moving easily. Good Luck!

mine did the same thing, I would not consider it a step back or anything. In fact I just left it alone and made no big deal about it and he came out of it as quickly as it started. I think it's a control thing, knowing they can when they want to but not being pressured. Mine did it a few times about that age, and now he is 3 months to 3 and doing great. It's a slower process for boys and I think this is common, just don't draw a lot of attention to it or do anything special becuase of his new behavor and it will go back to being interested in the big potty. Good luck

Hi, M.. I would just ask him if he wants to try every once in a while. I would only talk about the potty when he brings it up and let him set the pace. He might have thought the idea of it was more intriguing than the actual going, so he might take some time to go again. I would continue doing the things you used to do like reading the potty books, etc. Good Luck!

Did you use a little potty or a potty seat? I think sometimes it is helpful to just have the little potty around, out, they can sit on it however and get used to it... I agree not to push it, but I also think that 23 month olds can be ready. Enjoy it, it's fun watching them learn.

Then don't force this issue of potty training. My oldest son peed in the potty at 18months, but wasn't actually trained completely until he was 3. Physically your son can do it, but mentally he doesn't sound ready just yet. My almost 2 1/2 son is starting to get more interested in the potty, but hasn't used it. I sat him on the potty a few times and he acts nervous too and wants to get down. Ok, so I'll try again from time to time. He is interested in watching poop and pee get flushed, so that's a start!! Just encourage your son from time to time and ask him if he wants to use the potty..if not don't force the issue..they are so smart at this age, he'll let you know when he's more ready. Sounds like he's off to a good start!! Take care, V.
