Playdoh in Ear

My son put some playdoh in his ear. I removed as much of it as possible but I am not sure if I got it all. Do you think I should be taking him to the doctor to see if there is anything left inside or just continue flushing his ear ?

What can I do next?

I'd go to the doctor. Flushing it too much is not a good thing. It can become irritated. Also if something is left in the ear drum it can build up and cause a nasty infection.

Based on Chelsea's story alone with her nephew, I would take him in to the dr. The ear is a sensitive area, not something to mess with. Especially b/c if it is in too deep it wont be visible to the naked eye. This is too hard to determine on your own. Better safe than sorry.

That depends on how many times you've flushed it. If the water comes out clean, you probably got it all. Try speaking very softly into the ear. If he responds, then he can hear you, if he doesn't, then there's probably still some in there and he should be taken to a doctor because too much flushing can do some eardrum damage.

Take your child to the Dr I know how we don't like to waist our money when we feel like we did the job already but it is always better to be safe than sorry.

If it were me, hands down...I'd take my son to the doctor as soon as possible, because (but hopefully not), the playdoh could be lodged in his ear farther than you can see...and it'd be better for you to know (and rectify) that now rather than later.

I dont get overly excited about these things...more than likely, you got it all out. Just the other day my DD put a piece of pancake in her ear....you just never know with these little people!!!

I will have to say that I thought it was funny...hindsight says, I shouldnt have laughed...but when its funny, its funny!!!

Be careful when flushing ears; you could do more harm than good. I've been told to leave flushing to a medical professional. Stop putting q-tips in his ear canal, you could be pushing any play-doh, if there is any, in further.
You could take him to one of the many clinics now open (Walgreens and Walmart have started them in some of their stores) to have an inexpensive, little or no wait looksee. I did this with my youngest when she pushed a Barbie lipstick (d--- Mattel) up her nose. Because of her age, they saw her right away and it was over.
Good luck. Aren't kids fun?

I would try some peroxide to help push it out. Playdo should dissolve I would think. But, watch it - any foreign matter in the ear is not good.

You may have gotten it all, but I wouldn't risk it-esp. since you are dealing with your son's hearing.

I'm pretty easy going when it comes to "avoiding" Dr. visits, but some things aren't worth taking the risk, kwim?

Hi! I'd take him in to the Dr. At this age, they are learning a lot about how to talk based on what they hear, so anything that can block hearing could do developmental damage. My nephew put something in his ear (we never could figure out what) and my sister didn't know. The wax built up around it and was not visible to the eye. It was in there for almost a year until they took him for his checkup. By that time his speech was so affected he had to start seeing a speech therapist and the ear was so inflamed he had to have a major procedure to get the gunk out. It took two years to get his speech up to his peers. This is a pretty extreme example of what could happen, but if you can avoid anything similar by getting the play doh out right away, I would and I wouldn't take a chance with it.

definitely take him to the doctor so he can see deep into the ear with an otoscope.

you probably did get it all. I'd just ask the doc at his next checkup if his hearing doesn't seem to be affected. This is one of those moments that you'll remember as a mom for your whole life. Like the time my son ate sunscreen and I called poison control...
