Pinkeye

My 2 year old woke up this morning with some minor crusting on one of her eyes. It was not enough for her eyelids to be stuck shut, but it was definitely noticeable. After I wiped it away, she looked normal and her eye is not pink or swollen. Has this happened to anyone else? I am slightly concerned, but am not going to take her to the doctor unless its necessary. She does not have a fever or anything else, just wondering what you all think. TIA

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Thank you everyone! I felt better when I read your responses, and sure enough when she woke up today, clear eyes! Yay! The allergy/sinus answer is probably most likely the case. I appreciate everyones experiences, I was shocked to get so many answers!

My kids get eye drainage with ear/sinus infections. It's all connected and so stopped up the only place left for it to go is the eyes.

If the eye crust doesn't come back, you are home free. If it does, you can try going to Sprouts (or another health food store) and buy some holistic medicine for pink eye - it may or may not work. If all else fails, you'll have to go to the doctor.

I've had this happen with a couple of my kiddos. It could just be allergies. If it does not continue to crust over and stay pink, it is NOT pink eye. My Pedi told me the best way to tell if it is pink eye is to look at the inside of the bottom lid. If it is red and irritated too, then it is pink eye.

Good Luck!

I've had that happen to me before, only my eye was glued shut! It turned out to be a sinus infection that was so bad it was coming out of my eye. But be careful of pinkeye because it is highly contagious, but of course her eye will be pink if it is.

That doesn't sound like pinkeye. When my son had that happen once it ended up being an ear infection - i.e., the cruft will come out however it can - if ears aren't draining, I guess eyes are closer. Friends had told us this before we took son to doctor as the same thing happened with their kids (who were sick alot). Doc confirmed that it was an ear infection.

If it is pink eye it will come back during the day. I'd watch it carefully since we are about to hit a long weekend. You could even go ahead and make the doctor's appointment for this afternoon and then cancel if you do not need it. It is hard to get into the doctor at the last minute these days due to so many flu patients. Your doctor might even just call you in a prescription that you could only fill over the weekend if you decide that you need, and then you could avoid being exposed to the doctor's office germs!

I've seen that with simple allergies.

It's probably just allergies. keep an eye on her and if you notice that her eye is pinkish and looks like she's been punched in the eye (swollen underneath and discolored) then you should take her to the Dr. good luck

My little ones get this all the time. Pink Eye is essentially a cold that has moved to the eye. Wiping a runny nose and then touching your eye is all it takes to get pink eye. There are much worse cases, but for little ones it is normally just a runny nose moved north. Our pedi and optemetrist both suggest putting a little neosporin (sp) on a qtip and gently rubbing it along their closed eyelid (think putting on eyeliner). Neo is the otc verison of the same ointment the dr would give you. It doesnt hurt or burn and they will blink enough into their eyes to get them good and clear.

My son has seasonal allergies and this happens to him sometimes. If it starts to look like it's really red and she's always messing with it, I would take her to the doctor. Hope this helps! :-)

I remember my first daughter having this one morning, then the next morning, then the next... I thought it was pinkeye as well after it didn't go away. She ended up having an ear infection after taking her to the doctor. Apparently, fluid can get behind the eye and it has to leak out somewhere. You may just want to see if it continues; it could be a fluke thing (allergies) or in fact be pinkeye or maybe even an ear infection. If this is the first day, see if it happens again tomorrow. I understand not wanting to take your child in during sick season unless absolutely necessary. Good luck!

We went rounds and rounds thinking such symptoms was pinkeye in our 1 year old, and found out that it was just his sinuses backed up into his eyes.... If your child is dealing with sinus issues, that could very well be the case. Else, the rest of pinkeye symptoms may become more apparent as the day progresses.

My daughter suffers runny/crusty eyes about twice each year...it should be coming around any day now. :-) If you keep the eye(s) clean by using a fresh, warm, wet washcloth on it several times each day, you should be able to avoid infection. Good luck!

I'd watch it for another day or so. If she has no redness, itchiness or gooey stuff in it, it might just be an allergy type thing or clogged glands that could take care of itself. But if she gets redness or acts like it's really itchy it could be an infection (or allergy that needs drops) which would warrant a trip to the eye doctor. Hope this helps!

my daughter was diagnosed with pink eye for 3 months... it would go away and then come back once she was done with the medicine. Finally, a different doctor saw my daughter and said my daughter didn't have pink eye, she had obstructed tear ducts!!! I would have a doctor take a look... Especially since Pink eye is SOOOO contagious!

K.,

Pinkeye would have a noticeable redness to the white portion of the eye. Most pinkeye is caused by a virus, so the antibiotics that pedi's put kids on is utterly useless and even if it's the small amount that is caused by bacteria only shortens the duration of the infection by .73 days! It's self-limiting and just needs to be cleaned with a warm towel and watched. Also, homeopathic pinkeye drops are available to lessen the itching and redness. If if was pinkeye, she would have to stay home until it's resolved as its very contagious. It does not sound anything like pinkeye tho. Hope this helps ease your mind.

IMO, I'd watch it for the rest of today and then rather than take to regular doctor's office just take to optometrist office so you won't have to expose her to any unnecessary germs at the doctors office just to have him look at her eye. I hope that sentence made sense...I think it's a lot of run ons. Keep checking BOTH her eyes closely all day. Ditto on her temp.

Sounds like allergies. Did the crusting come back? With pink eye, I'm pretty sure it would.
