I recently heard of Phoebe Hearst School in Sacramento and it seems like a great school. It appears to be for 1st - 6th grades. Does anyone know if it also offers kindergarten? Has anyone had any experience with this school? If you have kids in this school, where did you send them for kindergarten. Thanks in advance for reading!

P.: I teach in SCUSD at a school near P.H. and my daughter attends a SCUSD school not too far away. P. H. does not have a Kinder. It houses two campuses. A GATE program and a regular program. If in 1st grade your child is identified GATE then you may chose to attend the GATE program. Otherwise you must apply to go to the regular school. At one time it was called a Basic School and still may. Most people send their child to their local school for Kinder and then during Open Enrollment apply to have their child attend P. H. My professional experience with this is school is that parents must put in a required number of hours each year, students must have good behavior and be at or above grade level academically or be kicked out. There is usually a good amount of homework required. Good Luck

P.,
I have a friend whose daughters go to Phoebe Hearst. For Kindergarten they just went to James Marshall which is their "home" school near their house.

Good luck deciding on K-

You are correct there is no Kindergarten at Pheobe Hearst. I have a few friends/co-workers who's kids have gone to Pheobe Hearst. Most of them kept their children at their pre-schools through the kindergarten program (I think they all went to "The Lighthouse" at SMUD)

They've had a bit of upheaval in the last few years in their administration, and some have complained that the uniform policy is not consistently enforced.

It's a pretty good school. Not very diverse though (ethnically or socioeconomically). Their test scores are very good, but part of that may be due to their entrance requirements so the kids there may have had high scores whereever they went.

Also, as a pp mentioned, there is a parent participation hour requirement. However, you can buy your way out of it which I personally find bothersome.

HTH,
T.

Children go to David Lubin for Kindergarten before having to be tested to get into Phoebe Hearst which is a gate school. David Lubin is a great elementary school as well and also has a small gate program so both are great options if you live in the East Sac area.
My son will be going to David Lubin this Fall and then we will see which school we'll go to for 1st grade depending on our experience at Lubin.
Good Luck!
