Hi moms.
I now have had my period for 12 days straight and I still have a steady flow of what looks like fresh blood. Not like what you would normally have towards the end of your period. I'm starting to get a bit worried.
Have any of you ever experienced this? What turned out to be the cause of it for you?
At first I thought maybe it's a prolonged period due to stress, but now I'm thinking it's something more. I have a Dr. appt. tomorrow, but just wondering about the possible scenarios and wanting to mentally prepare myself.
Thank you in advance.

What can I do next?

Could be your period is just changing.. or could be fibroid tumors,.

It is good you are going to the doctor..

Drink some orange juice if you have any.. and starting tomorrow.. start making sure you are getting enough iron in your diet.. you are probably anemic by this time, with this extra blood loss.

Do not worry yourself. I have been through this many times as I have gotten older.

How old are you? if above 40 your looking at early onset of Menopause or called Peri menopause. If not, then possible Poly cystic Ovaries. Could just be a fluke irregular period, especially if you haven't had this issue before. Hormones, environmental factors. I used to be regular as clock work till my 3 child, now I am all over the board, in days, times, lengths, flows, and colors. I am 36.

It would be helpful to know how old you are. I think that you are doing a smart thing trying to educate yourself so that you can ask intelligent questions. If you are over 40, that's one thing. If you are younger, it's another. If you are taking birth control pills or have an IUD, that's one issue.

Laurie gives you good advice about your iron. Ask the doc to check yours - I THINK that's just a finger stick test.

Please update us after you go to the doc, S.. We'd like to know how you are.

It really could be nothing. This has happened to me a few different times. The first time my doctor ran some tests and just told me that these things happen.

I really wouldn't worry!!! It's annoying, but it's probably nothing. Always a good idea to check with your doctor. I think you'll feel much better after your appointment.

Could be peri menopause which is a completely natural process. That's not to say it's fun and games ;-). Glad you are going to your doctor. Find out all you can and be ready to make some decisions to make the process easier to live with. There are things you can do about the never ending or heavy periods. I didn't do them and wish I had. They really are life altering and can put a big damper on your life. All the best!

It could be any number of things, some of which are trivial and some more serious.
It's good you are seeing your doctor.
A friend of mine's period got longer and longer until it was almost continuous and she was getting anemic.
Turned out it was a symptom of breast cancer.
They caught it early and she's fine now.

Don't think ahead of catastrophic conditions this could be - let the doctor do her thing. You don't say how old you are but with young kids you're probably not older than mid/late 30s - so I'm assuming you're not perimenopausal - although my girldfriend had her menopause by 38! It is most likely some kind of hormoney imbalance that they'll correct by medication.

I had this kind of bleeding last year that lasted a couple of months on and off - I had a very thick uterine lining. Ends up my body was making a lot of estrogen but not enough progesterone. Estrogen is to the uterine lining like fertilizer - progesterone is like a lawn mower. I took progesterone for three months (3 weeks of pills, one week off each month). By the end of three months I was back to normal. The doctor also did a uterine biopsy just to be sure but it was all clear.

Chance are your body needs a little tweaking. Aren't you glad you live in America and have access to modern medicine!?

Good luck mama.

Why post this question and youre going to the doctor tommorrow? Youre just gonna get yourself all worked up and worried when it might not be anything wrong at all. Dont worry, each individual is different.
As a teenager, I always had irregular periods. Then one time my period stayed on for almost a month. I thought I was dying, had internal bleeding or something. The doctor gave me some sort of pill to stop it, told me I had polysistic ovaries and put me on birth control to regulate my period. Turns out I didnt have polysistic ovaries, and my period regulated after I had my first baby.
Dont worry you will be fine
