Pee Wee Football? How Much Practice Is Too Much?

We are now doing Monday-Thursday evening practices 1.5-2 hrs each night for 2nd grade football. I think that is a little too much since the boys don't have a day of rest between. Is this normal or nuts? First year football mom inquires your opinion!

What can I do next?

Hubby coached 2nd grade football last year. They practiced 3 times a week from 7:00 to 9:00. When school started they moved practice time up to 5:30. I think 4 days a week would be excessive, especially once school starts again. Shouldn't be more than twice a week with a game on the weekend.

One of my boys was in football in middle school and they only practiced 3 days a week. Every other day is plenty in my opinion, especially for kids in 2nd grade.
Is your boy happy with the team he's on? If he is, just remember, he will be young only once and this phase only lasts a little while. If not, look around for other options.
A positive team experience builds good character and will affect him in a positive way for the rest of his life.
Godd luck with whatever you decide.

If your child loves it.. It's fine because boys need the physical outlet.

I think 4 practices a week is too much. We are starting DD in cheer this year and I'm stressing about making 3 practices a week. I grew up in Mesquite and they had practices 4 nights a week for 3 hours. I think the pee wee sports in this area are way out of control. Just my opinion.

No that's to much in my opinion.. Were on our 2nd son playing football, he'll be in 3rd grade, and they practice at most twice a week for 1.5 hrs. I'd check with the league and see if they have restrictions on how many hours they can practice.

We went to a parent meeting for 2nd grade football and they said that there are teams doing 5 times per week or more. Now that they have pads they need to drill how to tackle without hurting themselves. When school starts there is a 4 event per week rule so there will only be 3 practices per week. They need this time to drill and build muscle memory. Once practice becomes mandatory then if they are not at practice they will have to sit out half the game. They don't want injuries which as moms either do we! Hope this helps.

2nd grade is the first year for tackle. They have to learn to tackle properly or they could get VERY hurt. Just a thought.

I think to be fair, you might want to consult with a couple of dads too. After moving here from New England with my southern-raised husband, I was in for a huge shock when the first football season rolled around. Yes, it seems like alot, but I was told they really need the time to teach the boys such a complicated game. Our coach would call last minute meetings and practices and we were expected to drop everything to be there. All I know is nothing I said made a difference and my husband just looked at me like I was crazy when I complained. I think it's a huge male thing (imagine if all our mall shopping was limited to 3 months). This year I've resigned myself to letting go of my expectations and just going with the flow.

My 43-year old husband said that he thinks that is excessive. He played as a child in Odessa, TX (football crazy town) and said they did not practice that much. I know things have changed, but with a game too, you are going to be doing nothing but football every week. If the league doesn't think it is too much, you will have to see how much your son really wants to do it because he needs to be at all the practice to be a true team player. Good luck!
