Pediatric Dentist in Chicago - Chicago,IL

Hi. I need a good pediatric dentist for my 3 year old. I've heard that many pediatric dentists have the policy of no parents in the exam room during treatment. I would never take my child to a dentist like that, and frankly I can't believe how many parents do. I sat in a dentists office one time where a 4 year old boy screamed for his mommy for 30 minutes straight during his dental exam and they would not let the Mom in the room. Ultimately the mom demanded her child and left in a huff, and vowed never to return. I need a dentist that isn't so presumptious and inflexible, and understands that a little kid needs his parents support during things like this. Any recommendations?

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Took my son to Wee Care Pediatric Dentistry. This dentist is wonderful. Great experience for going to the dentist for the first time. My son had a couple of cavitiies, and it was painless. The office has fun toys and my son enjoyed it. Would also recommend this place.

I am a 40-year old mom - I have a 3-year old who does see a dentist with that policy of "parents by invitation only". I also saw this dentist when I was 3 until age 16. My 14 and 13-year old nieces also see dentists in this practice. None of us have a fear of seeing the dentist. They are very reasonable about children that they cannot calm - only sadists would allow a child to cry for an extended period of time without calling a oarent in. If you'd like to try them they are Dentistry For Kids at about 4800 W. Petersen in Chicago. Good Luck either way.

Hi,
I tried to do the business referral response but it didn't take the business name. I have taken my kids to the Tooth Fairy World, on Clybourne in Chicago for years. They automatically invite you to the dental chair and even encourage you to hold your child's hand etc. They work as quickly as they can which sometimes seems to upset the child more, but obviously their aim is to get the ordeal over with for the child. They also take the time to answer all your child's queastions.

Diana,
I am a general dentist in Chicago that treats many children, in fact, mine is a family practice.
To answer your concerns, many dentists don't allow parents in the treatment room because most children do better that way. In my own experience, children listen and respond to the dentist when the parent is not present in the treatment room, and it's important that the child listens to the dentist while they're in the chair. This builds a rapport between the child and the dentist as a caregiver, instead of someone the child potentially fears seeing. Personally, I do allow parents in the treatment room while I work with their child, although if the child begins appealing to the parent, or becomes uncooperative, I ask that the parent leaves so that the child focuses on us; though the parent can remain where the child cannot see them.
If there's any other questions you have that I or my office staff can help answer, please don't hesitate to call us!
Sincerely,
Dr. V. DiMario

We love the pediatric dentist at Webster Dental located on Lincoln, just by Diversey. Not only did I stay in the room, she let me sit in the chair with my daughter on my lap on her first visit so she would not be scared. My daughter is shy and has had a very positive experience with each visit.

i have taken my son to a pediatric dentist in skokie (north suburban dental assoc. ??) he was one at the time and the doctor and assistant were quite receptive to children and both my husband and I were in the room with him.

I also recently took him to Dr. Patty Cristomo on Northwest Hway in Chicago and she allowed me to be with him during his checkup. she is not a pediatric dentist.

hope this helps. if you need more infor i can try to track it down for you.

Dr. Mary Tierney in Winnetka is fabulous. She came out to the waiting room herself to meet my daughter and I and was gentle and sweet, but thorough. I think she has a city office, too. She's in high demand, so it may take some time to get an appointment, but once you're in, you can make subsequent appointments for future visits.
