Patches That Do Not Go on BS Uniforms

ok so the official response from the bs store said ds can only wear one "temporary" 9 wht i would call fun patch at a time. patches like pinewood derby or day camp, or walking our city's historic trail, or the father son cake bake. those kinds of patches.

I know myself and i am not one that would change a badge out every month. so i know i wouldn't do that.

there is another boy not in ds pack but that we see out sometimes that has his on a red fleece vest, the shop sells one that is red but made of felt and looks like a 2 yo cut it out. so would it be ok to use a North face type vest and sew the patches on that as long as it's red.

the shop women also recommened a shadow box to keep the patches in or sewing them on a blanket.. i'm not srue that appeals to me.

Ds has a very very small pack and to be honest his den leader is an add queen and when i ask her direct questions she goes off on a thrity minute tangent about what socks are best when you go mountain climibing in green land. wth?

So What do the rest of you do with them?????

What can I do next?

So What Happened?

Chicago mama, maybe the packaging was misleading, is it like a huge peice of bright red felt with a head hole and a slit down the middle? like those indiam vests kindergarteners make from paper bags??
I'm not asking that snarky, just wondering if all stores have the same or if yours might be different??

well I have hand sewn all of them on the red vest from the "scout store"....just because it was convenient to buy it there. ...but as far as I can tell there are no "badge police" comming round...so just do what ever feels right for your and your family. I sew on ALL the badges...I really have not seen a guide on where most of them go so I just wing it. No one has complianed to me yet and the kiddo is happy. I will say that sewing on those badges is a real pain in the a**. A true measure of my love for my son that I endure the sewing on of badges!

I've been wondering the same thing too. Right now they're sitting on his dresser. I wanted to make a vest so he can wear them and display them.

ETA: I think moms need a "Patch Sewer" patch for themselves. I hate sewing those things too.

My daughter is a Girl Scout. BS must follow a different set of guidelines because all of our fun patches are sewn on the back of their vests. My daughter is a second year Daisy Scout and the back of her vest is completely full, as in not one square inch left for a patch.

I have painstakingly hand sewn every single patch except for the last five patches when I stumbled across "Badge Magic."

http://www.scoutstuff.org/badge-magic-patch-adhesive-kits...

They have plain sheets where you cut to fit each badge and also have special packages that are pre cut to fit specific badges. For instance the "Daisy" petals are in one kit, our Journey awards all have their own kit, etc. I'm sure BS would be the same.

This stuff is really easy to use and believe me when I tell you those badges are not going anywhere. I've washed her vest numerous times and they are still attached and looking wonderful.

I have already ordered the sets she will need once she bridges to Brownies this May. No more late nights of sewing for this Momma.

Peace and Blessings,
T. B

We have them all on a "brag vest" from the scout store. I guess you could use any vest to put them on, but then it won't be offical uniform gear. I don't know if that really matters, though.

Yes the red felt vest is traditional for the "fun" patches. We had our boys make their own at a den meeting, when they were in 4th grade. We made it part of some other badge or belt loop work, something about handicrafts (?) I can't remember. Were they perfect? Of course not, but they were proud!

Your best answer can be found in the Scout Book your son was given - or at least he should have been given. If not, then go on the Boy Scout website and there are guidelines given as to where all the patches go. My son is an Eagle Scout - when he was in Cub Scouts, the leader had a red vest made for all of the boys; it's not real thick and it looks kind of cheap but the boys didn't care. All the "fun" patches went on it and it looks great and they're very proud of it.

As for the other patches, there are only a few that are supposed to go on the actual Scout shirt and the sash of course gets all the badges they've earned.

Good luck!!

My sons Cub Scout troop has someone who makes the red vests. They are made from a thicker denim like fabric.

We sew all his fun patches on there.
