I need some simple appetizers. Cheap and easy nibbles for my Christmas Party. It will be Christmas night. People may be stuffed from dinner, so I just want some inexpensive party foods to put out to absorb some of the alcohol! If you were hanging out at my house, drinking in front of the Christmas Tree after a long day, what would you want to snack on?

Meatballs are delicious. Mini calzones are amazing and easy to make. Cheese/bread platters are always good, and even add some feta with olives or tapenades with french rolls. Easy!

Cheese ball/log and crackers. Dips and chips. Sweet nibbles. Sausage balls (bulk sausage, cheddar cheese, bisquick mixed together, formed into balls and baked - like an all-in-one sausage and cheese buscuit).

A few thoughts...
cheese and crackers
veggies and dip
pumpernickel bread hollowed out and served with spinich dip
mini sandwiches - you can actually make the sandwiches using small rolls, or just set out a platter with deli meats and cheese
chex mix - make your own and you can use store brand cereal
meatballs - I use frozen meatballs and coat with a sauce, you can make sweedish, bbq, terriaki, or marinara sauce
pigs in a blanket
pulled pork sandwiches - put the pulled pork in a crock pot and serve with mini rolls

Some type of sweet popcorn, or just some holiday cookies. I just had a party and people munched on the cookies all night. Also, a block of cream cheese covered with a peppered jelly and some crackers, or just a veggie tray.

MMmmm. Meatballs are making my mouth water. Make sure you have plenty of toothpicks and keep the crock pot on warm!

When I am drinking, I love a real salty chip with a dip that's easy to dip (not too thick, maybe salsa, queso) and hopefully something I can just walk by, get a bite, and keep walking. I don't want to have to get a plate b/c then you have to put your drink down!

Popcorn, Pretzels, your puppy chow you mentioned earlier last week are all nice quick treats. Your hugs on pretzels with an M&M would be good for the sweet-toothed people. Although I like those with Rolos instead of Hugs.

Totally MEATBALLS. If you don't want to make them, there's a zillion different kinds in the frozen foods section. You can use the SAME meatballs , just warm them in a different sauce, one sweet and sour, one marinara, one teriyaki, etc.

Man, I LOVE meatballs! What else should we bring?

:)

Mini crabcakes. And believe it or not, pigs in a blanket. I also vote for stuffed mushrooms.

Stuffed mushrooms!!!

And have you tried those new flatbread crackers? (Nabisco, I think)

What about a hollowed out bread bowl and whatever it is that people fill that with?

here are a couple that go over good at our house.
mini smoked sausages or a ring of smoked sausage cut into slices
1 bottle heinz chili sauce (generic works just as well)
1 small jar grape jelly (not jam has to be jelly)

in sauce pan melt the jelly and add the chili sauce. mix up and put the little sausages and hot dogs in heat thru and you have a great appetizer. my dish is always empty when we go home. its great in a crock pot.

bacon wrapped water chestnuts are a huge hit also
I make this in a cake pan
2 or 3 cans of whole water chestnuts drained
1/2 lb bacon cut strips into 1/3's. wrap a slice around the water chestnut
sprinkle with brown sugar bake on 400 till bacon is done and sugar has melted. it is yummy. another one that the dish will empty quickly.

Bread is always good to absorb alcohol so I'd go with a hollowed out bread bowl with spinach dip, banana bread, pigs in a blanket.

If your goal is to counter the alcohol, stay away from simple carbs like breads and crackers. They turn into sugars, and so does the alcohol, intensifying the effects of the alcohol. I learned this lesson the hard way. Go for proteins, and offer bottled water to help avoid hangovers.
