Wondering if anyone has used exterior (100% acrylic latex) paint indoors before. I've read both good and bad reviews on using exterior paint indoors. Want to know if anyone has done this, and if there were any health issues involved.
thanks!

So What Happened?

okay, so i found out the exterior paint i have actually has less vocs than some interior paint; mine only has 88 gm/liter when the interior i used in the kitchen had 100 gm/liter .( to get the "green seal approval" must be below 150 gm/liter.) i asked the family dr. and the man at the hardware store what they thought and they said it is fine to paint a kids room with the stuff i bought. considering that it's low in vocs, and made with 100% acrylic latex (water based) and i'd only be using half a gallon, and to make sure it was well ventilated.
although, since i'm still a bit worried, i'll most likely be saving that paint for an outdoor project!

Look into milk paint -- we've gotten milk paint from the Old Fashioned Milk Paint Co. NO VOCs at all and it's organic! Perfectly safe to paint your kids' toys/furniture with, and they've developed a special formula to paint walls with. It comes in powder form and you have to add water, but the instructions are straightforward and the people at the company are very, very helpful with questions. It traditionally comes in farm/country type colors, but you can mix white in to make pastels -- we did our crib in three pastel colors and it looked gorgeous. You can order it online if there is no dealer near you. If you're interested: http://www.milkpaint.com/

I recently bought some exterior paint and couldn't find any with low- or no-VOCs. Please don't use anything other than these indoors.

I have a friend who only uses paint that has no odor. If I were to paint again, I would use that.

would never do it, very toxic. I would actually only use VOC free pain in a kids room.

I'm no expert, but I would NOT use exterior paint to paint my child's room (ESPECIALLY my child's!) I would use an interior paint that was as low VOC as possible. There are some really "clean" interior paints out there right now, we used one called Acropure that has been great, was minimally stinky and is supposed to be not as toxic as many others. I think it's made by Miller.

Benjamin Moore and other "quality" paint makers have jumped on the environmental bandwagon and have low VOC & zero VOC paint lines. They only sell their paints at their own brand stores so you have to do a little legwork to find a location near you. I assume Kelly Moore has VOC free stuff too. If you look at Home Depot you will not find them. Your friendly local interior designer or architect will know where they are & might be able to get you a discount. Try Sherwin Williams too...

I haven't, but I wonder why you would want to? I guess the exterior paints are much tougher (is that what you're going for--to protect from kids), but they would probably also have more VOCs (chemicals that are released into the air and BAD for you). I wouldn't ever use exterior paint indoors. Just ask for the kitchen/bathroom paint in satin--that makes it more durable and resistant to moisture and easier to clean than the standard paint in eggshell or flat.

I used exterior paint in my bathroom because of a moisture problem and previous problems with paint peeling.

I would NOT recommend using exterior paint indoors, there's a reason it's called exterior. They make lots of paints for high traffic areas and ones that are specifically labeled for kids rooms.
