Hi group! I have a 3month old and my husband was playing with her in the nursery yesterday on a little play mat. Well we have 2 indoor outdoor cats and he noticed a flea on the burber carpet IN THE NURSERY. This really bothered us and were wondering if maybe the group has any ideas about flea control and or treatment for the home that is ORGANIC. I use organic flea powder on the cats that I got at the Herb bar but if they are carrying them in doors we may need something a bit stronger but maybe still natural...I'm a little paranoid about chemicals in the home but not too too bad.

Any help appreciated.

New mommy,
Julie

Last year when my daughter was also 3 months old we had a horrible flea infestation. You could not even walk into the living room without having twenty fleas jump on you. I couldn't get Aztec to come in fast enough so I read something on the internet about how fleas cannot tolerate heat. So we turned up the heater, treated the cats, and "baked" the house for 2 days. The temperature needs to exceed 90 degrees, I believe. Well, it worked and we never saw another flea in the house.

Good Luck!!

Get a big bag of sulpher and dust your yard. It takes a little work, but it keeps the fleas and ticks away... and it is relatively non-toxic. I used a can with holes in the bottom and attached a string loop so I could shake it back and forth like an alter boy, dusting while I walked the yard back and forth in a pattern.
Keep it out of your eyes. And wait a day or so before you let the kids out. After a big rain, you have to do it again.
Good luck!!

I have a booklet called Healthy Pets. It is a collection of stories from pet owners and there are 19 short stories under the heading of "Fleas". I will be happy to give you one of these booklets. The process of getting rid of fleas on your pet is so easy and so inexpensive. There is nothing toxic;it is perfectly safe for children.

Fleas are NASTY, my dog brought them home last summer from being out in the country, I had nightmares for days of fleas crawling all over my bed. What I did was wash everything in hot water, I borrowed my neighbors steam cleaner and cleaned my carpets, and my vet gave us a pill for the dog that immediately kills the fleas. I am sure they have the same pill for cats. I didn't use any chemicals. I read to keep fleas from nesting in your yard, you have to keep the lawn mowed at all times. It makes sense, because we always spend a lot of time at my fathers in the country and we never had flea problems, but this one time the grass had not been mowed in weeks, it was high... good luck... yuck!

There is a very simple, non-pesticide solution. Vacuum three times a day. If you vacuum up all of the flea eggs, there will be no more fleas. It's more work than pesticide, but much much safer. Just because organic pesticide is natural, doesn't mean it isn't toxic. And pesticides that are not toxic to adults can be very toxic to children. Skip the pesticide.

I would call ChemFree or Aztec Pest Control. Both companies provide organic pest control. We have used ChemFree for years for our very south Austin flee and tick problem

Good luck!
